I'm just gonna throw this out there even though it might not be the best for you or your situation.
I've really been impressed with MacBooks/MacBookPros lately in the laptop realm. They have a really good build quality to them, small footprint and very thin/light, good speed with Intel Core Duo, great screen quality, superb battery life (for the MacBooks), and the life-saving breakaway power cable (which has saved me more than once). Even if you don't like MacOSX, I've setup a co-worker with a MacBook that he is using WindowsXP on via Boot Camp, and he is loving it. I setup the computer so its boots directly into Windows and he doesn't even touch the OSX.
A MacBook is a great idea AS LONG AS YOU DONT PLAN ON PLAYING PC GAMES. A MacBook Pro can handle HL2 Source fine in Boot Camp (done it myself).
Anyway, just throwing that in that for performance, build quality, battery life, and breakaway power, the MacBook wouldn't be a bad idea, even if to use with WindowsXP via Boot Camp.
Most amazing jew boots
