Those Zelda screens are so amazing. If that is anything to judge by, add to it that this game is supposedly bigger than earth itself, we might have game of the decade on our hands...

About the price and such, its a good value to be sure. I was hoping that if they go with the $249 price that it would pack in two sets of Wiimotes + chucks. Also, I've seen people whining about needing to buy 3 Wiimotes and 3 chucks to play multiplayer, but if I remember right, I think to play WiiSports titles, you don't need the chuck necessarily. Baseball I know needs only the Wiimote, though Boxing obviously needs both. Does Tennis use both?

All in all, very pleased, and wondering how in the hell I'm gonna come up with the money for this dang thing....

(Wait, I'm selling my cube ASAP before the used price drops to oblivion)

Double Post:
DVD Hollywood Movie playback is out....

GJ Metal.

You might want to better clarify the "whats in the box" section. US has Wii Sports packed in, as well as mini games included with the console.

For the most part, everything's good. And even though I justified a higher price for it last night, $60 for a second complete controller is pretty steep. And you know you're gonna want four thanks to Nintendo's great multiplayer games...

Sigh...I guess we couldn't expect them to get everything right.
Seriously, you don't NEED to buy 3 $60 controllers straight away. 3 wiimotes and 1 nunchuck will do just fine. So that's $140 for 3 'motes and a 'chuck.

Secondly, there is rumored to be a game (in Japan) called "My First Wii" that will pack a wiimote in and sell for about $40. Not bad if this is coming to america as well. $250 Wii + $40 "My First Wii" with Wiimote + $20 Nunchuck = 2 complete remotes and 2 multiplayer games for $310 bucks. Not bad at all.

BTW: IGN said something about Opera being free for a while or something. This isn't confirmed info, but initially Opera might be a free download.

IGN did say that wavebird plugins will fit on the Wii ports. I dont have a link but I KNOW I read that as for sure info.

BTW, why do you need to buy a GC controller?

Nintendo has always said no HD support. Wii DOES HAVE component out support at 480p (which is what 95% of DVD players have).

As to audio support, Dolby Pro Logic II via RCA cables again just like GC. There is no optical-SPDIF-digital audio ports.

Double Post:
This is my take =

$250 for a Wii
$50 for ZeldaTP
$60 for a Wiimote (or My First Wii game with packin controller)
_______
$360 + tax for Wii Boxing/Tennis/Golf/Baseball/Bowling multiplay and Zelda

That right there is enough to do to get you through the holidays.

Just saw this on IGN's website... They have a hands-on of "Wii Play"in NYC. This is more than most likely the same game as the Japanese and European games which come packed in with a wiimote,
Quote:
From the European Show -
Wii Play - which enables novices to get the hang of the controller. It'll be bundled with a second controller. Just like the Japanese 'My First Wii' package in fact.

Source
As far as I'm concerned, as long as Nintendo has a Wiimote packed in with this game at $40-$50, I'm very happy with the lack of 2 controllers in the box. This would mean that for about $310($320)+tax, you can have a Wii, 2 Wiimotes with chucks, WiiSports, and WiiPlay. Add in Zelda for $50 and you have a new system with 3 games, 2 controllers for under $400. Not bad at all.

Please, have WiiPlay packed with Wiimote.....

How ya doing, buddy?

Let me take a couple sentences here to clear up the whole Composite/SVideo/Component debate.

Sorry to say Jazz, but because of the way TV Tuner PCI cards are built, this is not a good way to make a comparison. When signal comes into your tuner card, the signal first of all might not be coming in through the same signal flow. Secondly, your card must de-interlace the signal which will produce more drastic than real life changes to the video signals.

I worked at a professional Audio/Video business, and we tested all three different types of cabling from a progressive scan DVD player to a EDTV Plasma, and to a standard SDTV CRT. We tested two DVD's, and also tested using THX's color/resolution/moire pattern screen. We were testing to decide whether we should upgrade to component cabling (as standard) for our customer rentals. These are our results.

First the plasma results. Composite was (obviously) the worst connection. Colors and extreme brightness difference were very blurred together. White and red and blue were the most significant bleeding colors. we had what I would say as about 50% resolution. S-Video was next in line, and DRASTICALLY better than composite. The connection increased resolution to approx 90% and bleeding was nearly eliminated in all colors. Bleeding caused by brightness levels was gone completely. Component cables were the best connection. Resolution increased to about 96% with no visible improvement in color/brightness/bleeding.

For the CRT SDTV, composite came in last once again. Resolution was about 30% with major bleeding issues across the spectrum. The low resolution made pixel definition very hard to judge as edges became soft everywhere. S-video came in second again, with resolution about 60% (note: better than composite on the EDTV plasma). The blurring/bleeding issues were once again DRASTICALLY reduced. Only the red spectrum gave slight bleeding troubles and this was only with saturation boosting on the TV. Component connection came in first again with about 65% resolution and even better lack of bleeding.

Conclusions: Composite < Svideo < Component

No surprise there. HOWEVER, the most significant improvements were seen between Composite and Svideo. Svideo cabling provides SIGNIFICANT clarity over composite in both interlaced and progressive situations. We found a component connection's improvements can only be tangibily seen when not dealing with interlaced/SD signal. Do note, that we did not test HDTV resolutions. ONLY SDTV (480i) and EDTV (480p).

It is my strong recommendation that everyone use S-Video connections instead of composite. There will be significant improvements in visual quality on any reasonably nice display (NOTE: Jazz's pictures above demostrate this difference between composite&svideo on a progressive display). I recommend spending money on component connections when dealing with progressive displays (LCD, Plasma, DLP, LCoS/ILA, SED) or with displays that have higher resolution than 480i/480p.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Don't forget that the games on the Wii are display at 480p internatlly (I remember someone from Nintendo saying that). That's one reason why I will be buying a component cable. I do switch back and forth playing on my 25" CRT (my room) and my 52" ILA (living room) TV (don't ask why! XP). There's one CRT SDTV that does have component input (it isn't mine) and using component cable was WAY better than s-video/composite.
Sorry, I forget about projection displays alot. I'm not a huge fan of rear-projection especially, though front-projection is good/ok to me. I love direct displays. To me they feel more like a window with the light coming right at me.

As to your results with the CRT SDTV, that is very interesting. Are you sure you were comparing S-Video and Component? At those low resolutions with properly tuned TV settings, they should be nearly identical. Differences in the display settings between inputs also has significant effects on the overall quality.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Those aren't *true* screens. There is absolutely no aliasing on anything in those pictures, so unless they were able to run a 4xAA on Wii, the pictures can't look like that. However, the lighting, reflections, and texture quality should be the same as those.

What's kind of funny is that people seem to be thinking that Wii games will look horrible, when in fact, they will probably look almost as good as most X360 games, but with a lower resolution and lower overall texture quality. That lower resolution also will show more aliasing problems than X360 games. I would bet that everyone will be pleased with Wii games graphically. They aren't going to be a slouch, but obviously not the best in town either.

I guess I also have a question about the classic controller, that may have been asked/answered in this thread... basically: why would I need/want one? Just for a more traditional feel? To play old games? Do some Wii games need it instead of the Wiimote? Eh?
N64 VC games will need it. SNES games as well I believe. NES games wil work with just a wiimote though (turning it on it's side).

Actually, Nintendo hasn't specified whether the Cube controller can be used with VC games or not. So there is an outside chance that you could use those for n64/snes games, but there is no guarentee.

I believe there should be S-Video cables available as well for Wii at launch.

Japanese Wii Accessories

You can see that they are making a Svideo cable, so that alone brings good news/hope. What I don't understand is why Yellow/Red/White/Svideo aren't all on one cable. Sure, not everyone has a HDTV, but any decent TV has a Svideo input. And the picture difference between Svideo and Composite is night and day. Not having Svideo on the standard with system cable is a travesty. Not having component is forgivable, but no Svideo in 2006 is not.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

Bravo, Nintendo, Bravo.
It is still said that Component cables will be in stock at Gamestop's and Best Buys. Don't count out the retail component purchase quite yet.

Well, there is a Wii sitting in front of me. All I have to say is thank God Zelda doesn't look like ass like everyone was saying it does. Composite cables are working pretty good on this 32" HDTV. I'm heading to Best Buy this morning to see if they have any component cables.

Had quite the time last night though. My roomie Jared who preordered at Gamestop preordered zelda and a few other games. So we go into the gamestop, and they had 3 copies of Zelda and 16 Wiis.... How the hell does that happen? So we ran over to Walmart, and grab the 2nd to last copy of Zelda out of 28. Lucky...

Well, I'm off to BB. Wish me luck!

Here are random thoughts/impressions on Wii:

Played Wii Sports with my friend Jared yesterday. I kicked his ass in bowling. All the games feel pretty good. We played tennis, baseball, bowling, and golf. All felt good and were fun. I think the golf game will work well for golfers, but for non golfers it isn't a blast. Tennis and bowling are great. Really alot of fun. 4 player action would be great.

Setting up new controllers to communicate with your Wii is easy. You press the red Sync button on the Wii, and then press the red button on the controller. It is that easy.

The Mii channel rocks. It's quite a bit of fun making yourself and playing the sports games.

Make sure that you setup your internet connection properly in the setup menu before you go screwing around trying to use the wifi stuff.

The interface under the home button works at anytime, and its really great. You can control there what controller is number 1 and 2 and so on. Also settings are there for the Wiimote's volume, which it often seems too loud to me.

Zelda kicks ass.

The Wii is really worth it. I use a HTPC and after using the Wiimote to navigate the screen and all, when I switch over the mouse/PC, it feels clunky. I literally one time picked up the TV remote and switched from Wii to PC and started pointing with the TV remote like I was expecting something to happen. LOL

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

Same here. I have a 32" LCD and I sit about 6 feet away and it looks great to me.

I guess alot of it depends on if your TV has a good deinterlacer though. My Westinghouse has a Fadjoura deint chip that is just top notch. Other than that, if you have a 50" and you are sitting 4-5 ft away, it will alos probably look like crap.

I have to say, I'm much happier with composite on HD than I thought I would be, however, I can't wait for those darned component cables.

I've played over 10hrs of Zelda, and some (8) rounds of different Wii Sports games. I also made quite a few Mii's and dinked around in the menu for a long time. Haven't even had the battery hit half yet. I'm pretty stoked about the battery life. Much better than I had feared it would be.
