I used to go to this Un-official club in this big warehouse (wish I was invited there more often!) The music is right and the atmosphere is young and privelaged. Normally at this place some DJs will be operating a non-stop mix of Trance/Dance/DNB stuff, with addon instrumentalists every now and then. That's what the place is about really, for dancing at least. But then they have a full up band play every now and then, too. Tons of kids 16-26 drinking, smoking pot cigarettes and doing various drugs.
For me, if the music is right I won't be afraid to dance. And I absolutely love it when I get into it, it's really it's own escape. Other good places for me to dance are concerts. Seriously, if you want to dance and not be ashamed, find a concert of one of your favorite groups and the music will have more control over your self-conscious, in that setting at least.
