Odd LAN problem

I'm at my wits end.
we have 2 computers connected through a LAN (through a 10/100 Ethernet switch) and in Windows XP the comps have no problem finding each other, but they can't find each other when playing a LAN game - no matter which game we try. disabling firewalls doesn't help. We've also added IPX protocols and tried setting the frametype to 802.3, but nothing seems to help.
help me GFF community, you're my only hope.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

yep, pinging works 100% on both machines, which just makes it more odd.

There's nowhere I can't reach.
