I've played FF7 under XP and have had similar problems. When I get to the sewers area just after meeting Don Corneo the first time, the game would crash. Strangely enough, the patch didn't fix it for me. It's possible that the game has a hard time with the hardware you're running. At the time this game came out, GeForce2 cards weren't even released yet. I've seen a few patches to make the game a little more compatible, you might wanna google for them.
As for other games crashing, make sure you have the latest drivers for your motherboard and video card.
