I only care about upgrading things when my previous gadget doesn't do what I want anymore at reasonable expectancy.
For the longest time I thought having a ton of cool gadgets would make me a cool person. BULL. SHIT. I tried it and all I did was successfully make myself look like a total nerdgeek.
I fit my electronic gadget needs around how I want to project my self-image to others. I have a game consoles now I never play, a bitchin' digital camera, a RAZR phone, and 3 computers with very specific purposes.
The RAZR was over the top for me and I don't really know why I bought it. I don't find too many of my old console games entertaining anymore so I don't play them hardly. A camera isn't what I'd call a nerd accessory, but I'm a photography nut now. The whole '3 computers' thing seems nerdy at first, but not until I explain their purposes. 1: A tiny HTPC. 2: A file server for maintaining clients' web sites and my movies/music. 3: My gaming rig made of pure nerd. :P
I also own an older Chevy half-ton that I love to death. I love sitting high up and the amount of power it has. It's waaay more comfy than any new car you can buy because of the bench seat. Best of all, I've only spent $900 in repairs over the last 3 years and it has 360,000Km on it! It's built to last and I love the slightly rough ride it gives. I don't plan on getting a newer vehicle until I crash it.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
