Spoiler:
Also, has anyone noticed this? At first it sounds like it'd be really fun, but...when I read into the rules, I'm a bit skeptical. My major qualm is that I'm thinking people who've had JP copies of the game since its release are going to have a pretty big advantage. I would imagine most of the Round 1 people are just going to be adjusting from Melee to Brawl mechanics (whether it's with general gameplay, items, characters, stages, etc.) while those who have had the game are generally going to dominate because they already know how it all works. Or most of it, at least. I wouldn't be surprised at all if when this all comes down to the 8 semifinalists that most (if not all) of them are going to be people who have had the game since its Japan release. Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() ![]() |
![]() Anyone think there's going to be big lines at Gamestops and whatnot on the late night of March 8th? I wasn't expecting anything too big for the midnight release of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, for example, but I was quite surprised. It was a good thing I paid the full price in reserving, because they eventually let those people come to the front of the line and I was pretty far back. The fear of getting mobbed was the only thing that kept me from turning around, pointing and yelling to the rest of the crowd (yes, crowd): "YOU WERE NOT PREPARED!!" ![]() I don't know whether or not Gamestop will still be busy with the opening round of their tournament by that time, but needless to say, I'm paying the full price with my pre-order of Brawl before the night of release, as it could for all I know save me from an hour or so of waiting. Or even worse, a raincheck. ![]() There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() ![]() |
Ugh...
Spoiler:
EDIT: Oh, by the way, does anyone know or have a list of the default characters? I have this horrible feeling that Gamestop's tourney isn't going to have anything unlocked. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() ![]()

![]() How ya doing, buddy? ![]() ![]() |
Hrm...a little interesting, but still not what I was hoping for. I know Brawl's pretty much all about the multiplayer, but I am glad that they're giving what seems like a pretty solid single player mode, campaign or what have you. Even neater that a friend can jump in along with you to play, I like that.
I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() ![]() |
..Not that I won't get to do it (provided that line isn't too long), it'll just be restricted to friends. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() ![]() |
Lucario!? Ah, come on already!! Wait...are these being put up in roughly the order you unlock them in (at least as far as the secret fighters go)? I would find that rather displeasing. ![]() FELIPE NO ![]() ![]() |

EDIT: Fox and Falco's voices sound like those they had in Star Fox Assault, which were fine in my mind. Yeah, Pit's is kinda lame, Ike's a little weird. Meta Knight just sounds crazy evil, heh. If that's how Meta Knight sounds, I wonder how Ganondorf's going to sound. ...Hopefully not just grunts and groans, he deserves more than that. There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() ![]()

Reason: Commenting on the voices

Really, I don't think it's THAT bad. Yeah, some people might sound a little silly, but I thought Fox and Falco had decent actors in Star Fox Assault and it sounds like they got the same people for Brawl. And yeah, I'd like it if Ganondorf had more than grunts and growls (or a laugh) for his voicing, but even so, he's still really bada** as is.
...But yeah, this is seriously reminding me of anime elitist fanboys (or girls) that never have anything good to say about English dubbing, EVEN when it's good. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() ![]() |
That's not the same voice actor from Star Fox Assault. And that video was....complete and utter wtf. ![]() I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() ![]() |
By the way, on the note of why you can't change to Japanese voicing/text, I do have one theory: maybe they didn't implement it simply because it would've taken more time to do and likely result in yet another delay. Just a guess, but that wouldn't surprise me.
I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() ![]() |
Yeah, I might play with a friend for a while (maybe co-op SSE) and then do that on my own for a while. Seeing as how my character might take some time to unlock.
As for the midnight release and the tournament, I had to pick which Gamestop to reserve and sign up at since there's two in town here, and went with the one on the same strip as where I work. Though I've discovered some potential car problems for that day; I might have to friggin' ride a bike over from the opposite side of town. ![]() EDIT:

I'm not terrified by it either, I just wouldn't really look forward to it much.
But really, the last thing Nintendo needs are sue-happy American parents holding the company responsible for their minor kids unwittingly joining an online brawl that turns out to be more like a cyber session. I know that sounds a bit far-fetched or extreme for an example, but I wager Nintendo could be easily blamed for lesser voice chat-related issues and they'd simply rather not take that risk. Not to mention, that getting it to work properly would probably make us wait even longer for the game to be released. Most amazing jew boots ![]() ![]() |
Well, I think the issue too is that there might've been more Sakurai would have liked to include, but like I was saying earlier, it would've meant us having to wait even longer, and he didn't want to do that. I'm sure another delay for the US release wouldn't be very well received even if it was explained why. (Not to mention the people still waiting for a date in Europe.)
EDIT: But you are right Acer, he definitely is leaving the door open with this one, and it'll make the next Smash game (whenever that is) all the sweeter. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() ![]()

Hmm..I made a reserve a couple months back but didn't actually pay in full until about a week ago. Hope that doesn't matter.
As for controllers at the tournament, yeah, the rules say the store will provide the controllers, but they don't say what type(s). And that you can't bring your own. It WOULD make sense for a Gamecube controller to be an option; it'd be utterly retarded if it weren't. But oh well...if it isn't thought to be already, this tournament could turn out to be a complete joke. There are numerous ways it could be really unfair for a lot of people, being stuck with a Wii Remote (& nunchuk?) instead of a Gamecube controller to name just one. But in any case, I've decided to participate, and hopefully that'll earn me a decent spot in the line. Interestingly enough, I only signed up a couple of weeks ago and I was first to do so in that store. Last I asked though (which was a while back) the workers at the Gamestop I pre-ordered at told me they're aiming to have everybody out by 12:15. Yeah, good luck. ![]() Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() ![]() |
(..Jeez Gamestop, just piss all over the Smash tournament community, why don't you. Even the regular Melee players not part of SWF won't like the choice of controllers.) There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() ![]() |
Well you were right Slash, they used the Wiimote/nunchuck. (I'm actually surprised I'll be the first to report on the tournament here.)
Complete joke. The vast majority of the matches had people just fumbling around with the controls, i.e. simply falling off and not being able to get back on. So a lot of wins were due to that and not being able to compensate within a minute's time. Nothing was unlocked, so the staff constantly had to deal with the nagging "NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHING" after almost every fight. Most annoying of all, I lost the second time around....to the ****ing shock mouse. Now, it wasn't so much that as the fact that, in addition, the guy was being a dick about it, like "Lol u got owned by Pikachu" gloating to other people "Pikachu owns". He even went so far to say that he was going to duct-tape the trophy to the hood of his car after he won. Even though the trophy wasn't that big, we all know he'd be trying to compensate for something anyway. Well, I'm actually not sure where the guy went, but I do know he didn't win. I wanted to rub it right back in his face, but oh well. I didn't get to find out just how his defeat came about because the staff thrust us losers out into the cold wind, rather than let us stay and watch. (Yeah, this Gamestop's not within a mall, it's on a strip mall.)On another note, a different dude was trash-talking to some little kid, practically yelling "You gonna get owned!!" as Sudden Death began (I saw a lot of those ), and then the little kid was the one that got the hit in. Best poetic justice I've seen in a while.Anyway, needless to say it was a perfect night to be cold and really breezy. However, the line wasn't too huge here and there were plenty of copies for everyone. I was lucky enough to have a warm car to wait in until just before midnight. As for the game itself? Well, I am having fun with it. I did try an online brawl but even though it was after release, I had the same issue as Miles, waiting for 5 minutes or so before just giving up. I've been doing mostly SSE, but I admit it wasn't quite what I was hoping it would be. Spoiler:
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() ![]() |
With Brawl, so far I think I'm lucky. I had to do a Wii system update but other than that I think the game's running fine for me. Most amazing jew boots ![]() ![]() |
I'm definitely quite surprised as to how long SSE takes. They really made me have to earn Ganondorf. Granted, even so, SSE is probably the fastest way to unlock everybody (if not most of the characters), except maybe the ones that take only a few matches to unlock, like Ness, Marth or Luigi.
As for stickers, not I. I didn't want to become dependent on them or get used to having whatever extra effect they grant and be thrown off by it when I play multiplayer or something. On a funnier note... Spoiler:

And my friend code, but I don't need spoilers for that. 3780-8684-0590 EDIT: Wow, finally got in some online random brawls and managed to KO everybody with Ganon's FS. Ahh that was sweet, won the match with that too. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() ![]()

Does anyone else think the Assist Trophies are ridiculously powerful? Like, more than Poke Balls and some maybe even rivaling the FS of some characters? ....And they put Game & Watch up there before Ganondorf? For. Shame. If their pattern was any indication, I believe Ganondorf was next in line. Oh well, not that it really matters much now. FELIPE NO ![]() ![]() |
I just figured the lag was due mostly in part to me being on crappy DSL.
![]() I haven't been concentrating so much on online brawls though. Now that I've got all the characters unlocked it's on to getting the stages and music unlocked, the latter mostly because I'm looking to update the CSV of all the tags of the music rip I have and then post it. Don't know if others on GFF or maybe ffshrine are busy with that, but I figure it wouldn't hurt to get cracking on it myself. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() ![]() |
I think I lost that attempt. ![]() By the way, for anybody interested, me and Audiophile are trying to get a group together to tag the game's music here. Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() ![]() |
