Another moment of hilarity was when one of the party members received a broken leg and managed to wander off and get lost the next day, delaying the entire wagon by about 4 days when we went out to look for him.

Good times with the whole rafting ordeal though.
Or sometimes we'd play it just to purposefully screw ourselves over. For example, by fording a 7-foot-deep river. And then if someone drowned we'd be callous enough to say, "Ah, the moron deserved it if he can't even swim."

I remember how nervous I'd get at caulking a wagon and floating across a river because of that slight chance of the wagon tipping. Or when you had to float down the Columbia River.

Later makes of the game seemed quite a bit harder, I think. For example, if someone got sick I'd have a few options on what to do, usually being stuff like administering some medicine I'd never heard of before in my whole life, let alone even knew what they were used for. And then they die afterward, big surprise there. Or getting to some steep rocky hill with options that don't list the pros/cons/risks of the choices. And with those, it often seemed like it didn't matter which choice you picked, something bad would happen.
