They don't unlock anything in game, they don't effect anything in game... it's just some superfluous bullshit.
I think it was stated earlier, but Mass Effect actually rewards you.

As for Achievements, they're a 2nd thought to me. I play games, because I want to, not because said game gives easy points. Though, to say achievements are completely wrong is kinda saying that extra stuff in a game is wrong because instead of an in-game bonus mission there's achievements more or less. Now this varies from game to game, and Skills explained it earlier, about how some games can get it right, while others are completely horrible.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Yeah, beating those optional dungeons is not exactly rewarding, cause most of the time those dungeons are harder and a waste of time.
Some games do make rewards for that. Take Persona 4 for example, to get "such-and-such" character's secret weapon, you kill "this" extra boss in "that" dungeon. Not to mention, with some people, taking on the optional dungeons is more of a set challenge for them. You may think it's a waste of time, but then later on, those optional dungeons could turn into something to go back and to play and test your ability on.

And showing online some kind of unbelievable achievement will get you flamed, and people will just say how "non-lifer" you are. :/
They're just jealous.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

The only achievements I dislike, are the ones that involve online play, when 1/2 the time, the online portion is badly coded or in the sense that people can skimp out on fighting you. Take SC4 for example. Either 1/2 the time you'll get a server is full, or when you are about to defeat someone, a "disconnect".

Granted, it's not necessary, but I try to have fun online, and it doesn't help when people play cheap.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
