Most of the games I buy are second-hand, even for the current generation. Everything from previous generations is second-hand (or third, or fourth, or ...). I've never bought a handheld second-hand though, but I've also never lost the older-generation units, so I've had no need to really explore that avenue.
I havn't had much problems with used equipment, especially through ebay where sellers actually value their ratings. Only bad used console I bought was an N64 from a local EB|Games. Apparently they buy back consoles on the customer's word because the first unit they gave me wouldn't even boot. I did have the satisfaction of making them haul out the 20 foot stepladder to test the thing on a ceiling-mounted television when I brought it back, though.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
