Before 1750, the atmosphere, on average, contained 280 parts per million of carbon dioxide. As of February 2005 that number is at about 375 ppm (source), and of course, steadily increasing. Say what you want about man's activities having a minimal effect on the heating of the planet, but hard numbers don't lie.
Heating and cooling cycles typically take thousands of years to complete. We're shooting for it in just a few hundred. We can do it if we try hard enough. The thing is, the majority of people (these days) aren't brushing it aside. The government is. As long as people think an oil-loving bible thumper is the right fit for the job, regardless of how inept he is at dealing with every major issue facing the country, we're shooting ourselves in the foot.
