TV on DVD Discussion

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I'm freaking addicted to collecting TV shows on DVD. TV DVDs are the pride of my DVD collection, and the part of it I'm most proud of.

So I want to know who else likes collecting TV DVDs. Feel free to discuss how big your collection is, what titles you have, what titles you want to get, titles you want to see released, just everything about TV on DVD.

But no lists. Don't just come in here and post your collection and leave. If you post your collection, tell us facts about it like how long did it take you to acquire it, and how has it cost you so far. And if you want to talk about an addition to your collection, make sure to tell us why you chose that title, and other stuff like that. Simple listing posts will not be tolerated.

I'll start off by posting my collection:

24 Seasons 1-4
The 4400 Season 1
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Volume 1
Chappelle's Show Season 1 and 2 Uncensored
Curb Your Enthusiasm Seasons 1-4
ER Seasons 1-4
Firefly: The Complete Series
La Femme Nikita Season 1
NewsRadio Seasons 1 & 2
Rescue Me Season 1
Smallville Seasons 1-3
South Park Seasons 1-3
Titus Seasons 1-3

The first show I ever bought on DVD was Chappelle's Show season 1, and that was about two years ago. At first I didn't think much of it, but then I saw saw how great it was to own an entire season of a show. So after that, I slowly started building up my collection with another show I liked, 24. After that though, I started going full blown, getting shows I liked, shows I had only half seen (like Titus and Aqua Teen), and shows that I had never seen before. This last part turned out to be the biggest part of my collection, as hadn't seen about half the shows in it before purchasing them (like ER and Smallville). All in all, I've spent nearly $1000 on my collection.

My favorite show in there is 24. The best TV show ever is made even better with a slew of extras, including commentary tracks, deleted scenes, and behind the scenes featurettes (except on season 1, unfortunately). But the best TV show in there that I hadn't seen prior to DVD is ER. I was totally addicted to this show when I started watching it, and wound up watching all four seasons (91 episodes) in less than two months.

How ya doing, buddy?

Well, the first three seasons were recently reduced to an MSRP of $59.99. I know that's still expensive (though most places sell them for less than the MSRP), but it's better than the $99.99 MSRP (which is what the fifth season is still going for).

I don't how it is in Australia, but season 10 is scheduled to be released on May 23 in America, with season 11 to be released sometime before the end of the year. There is also talk about a complete series box set being released as well.

Unfortunately, it might have been cancelled. It was scheduled to come out on Feb. 28, but it was removed from Paramount's release schedule even before then, with no word on another date.

I hope that's not the case though, I was planning on getting this series sometime down the line. Now, it's not so appealing if I can't get the entire series. But I guess something is better than nothing.

Lois and Clark season 2 was released in region 1 in January, and season 3 is gonna be released on June 20, the same day a bunch of other Superman releases are going to be released. Here's a link to the story on tvshowsondvd.com.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Could you tell us a little more about your collection (like your favorites, etc.), as I mentioned in the first post that there should be more than just a list.

Did anyone pick up Sleeper Cell this week? I heard this show is supposed to be good (some people even say better than 24, but I doubt that), and I was actually considering getting it. The only reason I didn't is because I don't have any cash at the moment. Even when I do get some money though, is this worth picking up now, especially over other releases that are coming out soon that I wanna get (mainly Robot Chicken season 1, Over There, Mind of Mencia saeson 1 Uncensored, and the recently released Newsradio season 3), or should I wait for a sale or a price drop?

I was speaking idiomatically.

I was hoping that The X-Files would get released in a Complete Series Collection, or something like, since I haven't seen that much of the show even though it looks interesting. But, this show has already been released about three times already between the original run, the Mythology sets (I know they weren't the whole series, but it was a lot of the episodes), and the recently released thinpak sets. I still hope they might consider releasing the whole series in one set, but I doubt that will actually happen.

Actually, they're up to season 6 now, with seasons 7-9 coming out on June 6th. I wish once they did reach the end they would release one giant set, but because these are so much cheaper I doubt they will. Unless they make the set a bundle of all the thinpak releases for the same price as they are now, I just don't see it happening.

But then again, they are releasing new Buffy thinpak sets, even after they already made the Chosen Collection. So I guess The X-Files taking the opposite route, releasing the thinpaks first and then a complete collection, wouldn't be too farfetched. But even if they don't release one, I'll probably still wind up getting these thinpaks.

Yeah, but for $40 each, it's still cheaper to get the Chosen Collection. But since that was only supposed to be a limited edition, I guess they felt the need to offer something cheaper than the original sets while being easier to find than the Chosen Collection.

From what I've read, no. But unlike The X-Files thinpaks, they should be retaining the extras that were on the original sets.

I finally went ahead and bought Sleeper Cell yesterday (even with its outrageous "Better than 24" quote on the box). I was considering either this or The L Word season 1 (based on recommendations from a friend), but ultimately decided on this due to its cheaper price. I haven't watched it yet, but it looked good when I skimmed through the first episode.

Also of note is that this is my first purchase of a DVD from Showtime. I don't have the channel, so this'll be my first taste of their programming. And even though this one was kinda cheap (10 hours worth of episodes for $30), it seems like in general Showtime is almost as expensive as HBO (the only show of theirs in which I own being Curb Your Enthusiasm, as they only sell for $30 per set). Most shows of theirs I saw (including The L Word) were like $50 or more, for not that many episodes (not as mant as a regular network show, anyway).

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Just wanted to mention that Target has some sets on sale for $23. This includes:

Gilmore Girls seasons 1-5
Nip/Tuck seasons 1-2
The O.C. seasons 1-2
One Tree Hill seasons 1-2
Veronica Mars season 1
The West Wing seasons 1-5

Of all those, I'm definitely getting Veronica Mars. I saw an episode on TV last summer, and it seemed interesting, but I've never seen the set for lower than $40. I know I'll probably like it, but I don't really like spending so much on shows I've never seen before, so this gives me a chance to check it out on the cheap.

I also know I'll pick up at least the first season of Gilmore Girls, and possibly even more. I know I like the show (I've been watching the reruns on ABC Family for a while now), but I've never seen it straight through from the beginning, so this is good oppurtunity to do that.

Other possible pick ups include Nip/Tuck and The West Wing. I used to watch Nip/Tuck when it first came on, but for some reason (that I can't remember, even though I know it wasn't because the show was bad) I stopped watching it. I still don't know for sure though, because I've seen it for cheap before and still never bought it. I guess it just depends on how much I want to spend. As for West Wing, never seen it before, but it seems kinda good. It may be worth a blind purchase.

I only wish they included some more (or some better) titles. It seems that these are all Warner Bros. releases, so I wish they would have included some of their other shows as well, such as Smallville (still need season 4) or (thinking way outside of the realm of possibilities here) La Femme Nikita. Heck, ER would have been a good choice as well (even though I have all of the seasons that are out at the moment), anything over The O.C. and One Tree Hill.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

This week's new releases:
The Andy Griffith Show: The Complete 6th Season
Baby Felix: Volume 01- His Magic Bag Of Tricks
The Bullwinkle Show: The Best of Boris & Natasha
The Bullwinkle Show: The Best Of Rocky And Bullwinkle
Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist: Season 1
Everybody Loves Raymond: The Complete 6th Season
The Facts of Life: The Complete 1st and 2nd Seasons
The Golden Girls: Season 5
Life Goes On: The Complete 1st Season
Northern Exposure: Seasons 1 & 2 (New Package)
The Phil Silvers Show (AKA Sergeant Bilko): 50th Anniversary Edition
Rescue Me: The Complete 2nd Season
Scrubs: The Complete 3rd Season
Search For Adam & Eve: The 1st Season
That '70s Show: Season 4
Trailer Park Boys: Season 5
The West Wing: The Complete 6th Season

This week's deals:
CSI Seasons 1-2: $20 (Best Buy)
Grey's Anatomy Season 1: $15 (Best Buy)
Sex and the City The Complete Series: $150 (Best Buy)
Titles in red: Free $5 Gift Card with Purchase (Target)
Titles in blue: Save $10 when you purchase season 1 or 2 of same show (Circuit City, Best Buy[applies only to Scrubs])

I don't plan on picking up any of the new releases this week, though if I was going to I would probably only get Rescue Me: Season 2. As for the deals, I'll probably get the first two seasons of CSI, because $20 each is a steal (Season 1 MSRP is $80, and Season 2 is $90, but the cheapest I've been able to find them before this was for $50).

Well, you're probably gonna have to get it from somewhere that sells a lot of TV on DVD. I've never seen any seasons at Target, and I just recently saw seasons 1 & 2 Wal-Mart, though not season 3. I got my copy at Borders, which is usually good at having lots of older and harder to find TV DVDs. Other places that probably have it are Best Buy and Sam Goody, as I believe I have seen it at those places.

As hard as it is to find though, it's definitely worth it. Season 3 had just as many good episodes as seasons 1 & 2, and it definitely ended the series in a way that you would expect from this show.

Well, I hope this info makes you a happy camper. Tale Spin is coming out on DVD on August 29! This is just 'Volume 1' (the first 27 episodes), so if it sells well enough I'm sure they'll release more volumes in the future. Also, click here for a bigger picture of the front cover and a menu screenshot.

Yes, the pilot episodes are in there as well (look at the bottom of the cover art). They made sure to include them after making the mistake of angering fans by not including the pilots for Ducktales and Chip and Dale: Rescue Ramgers on those DVD sets last year.

Oh, okay. I haven't heard anything about that, but I imagine that they would most likely put the uncut versions on the DVD. There have been shows released on DVD that were cut (like the first season of The Cosby Show, which was released with the edited syndicated versions of the episodes), but for the most part studios usually try to release them uncut.
