In what way does the internet stop working (what error messages etc)?
Are you on a wireless network, if so can you view other computers and access network drives?
Does the internet stop working while openoffice is open, closed or both?

So Open office seems to be stopping your IP address from being configured?
Have you tried going to command prompt and typing in ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew?

There's nowhere I can't reach.
