Have you tried going to the Control panel -> Sounds and audio devices -> Advanced (under speaker settings) -> Speaker setups, perhaps 2.1 speakers are listed.
-EDIT- Have you tried changing this setting in the AC97 Control panel (under speaker configuration)? AC97.jpg Jam it back in, in the dark.
