I don't see how anyone could defend the extremes of either side. They are probably the worst thing for your party, as they give a figure head for the other side to point at and try to make out the entire political view to seem as bad, or in the same line of thought, as them. Plus it promotes more thinking along their lines of "pro-party, regardless of what they might be standing for" mentality, which is always bad.
