You have to literally remove the battery from the laptop, and take the RAM out of the bottom of the laptop in order to find out. There are usually more than one bay so you'll have to look. Take the RAM out and read the sticker and write everything down. (ex: PC3200ddr2 blahblah) Normally, you have to purchase the RAM from the vendor...which Dell will just charges an obscene amount for.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

No you don't. I bought more RAM for my laptop once off of Newegg, and another time it was just a generic piece I bought from someone at my school (they had a different brand of laptop, as well). You just have to be sure to buy the right kind.

No, no...you CAN buy RAM from somebody else, but sometimes you have to order it directly from the manufacturer. My prime example is my personal experience sitting on my desk at home. I have a Sony Vaio (god if I remember the model) which has 512 and I wanted to boost her up to 1gb+. It will cost me damn near $400-$600 to get a new stick on RAM. About $400 for 512, and about $600 for 1gb. Pfft, better off just buying a new laptop with $600 more to play with. :/

There's nowhere I can't reach.

What? I've never heard of that before. You got ripped, big time.

Newegg also has RAM identifier using your machine. Memory Configurator
You're crazy if you think I bought it. However, I've had several types of Sony Vaio RAM thrown my way due to people not needing 1GB sticks anymore. NONE of them fit at all...this Vaio's RAM is specially manufactured by Sony ONLY. I've asked several times if I could purchase it elsewhere. I'm stuck paying an abundant amount of money for 512+!! So I just sucked it up and built a nice computer with spare parts laying around the house. Asus A8V-Deluxe w/ 4GB of RAM (can't remember what type, and I can't get the board to recognize every stick. Don't suggest /pae in boot.ini because it doesn't work either. ), AMD Athlon 3600 64-bit proc, evga geforce 6800 ultra ddr3. I have a fiber channel card - just no fiber to use with it...for now. Going to configure RAID's with the controllers so I can stress test my Windows Home Server.

And I didn't know Newegg had a RAM identifier...I haven't bought RAM in a long time from newegg. Always had sticks given to me for free. (Love my IT job.)

l0ve technology, ya? :/

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
