haha right been a while. It also sounds the same way, in French. xD

While we're talking about French, here is some random fact. Taake pronounces to "ta queue" which basically translates to "your dick". That makes for quite clumsy musical conversations ...

Oh God I love Taake !
wut!? Oh ...

The Morrigan's Call is a kickass album, particularly when you consider how hard the few CDs before it sucked.
Reeeaaaally didnt like it. I even prefer their earlier ones, actually. =/

I never liked them, for some reason. It's weird because they have all the stuff that makes good folk/viking metal, but I dunno, there must be something lacking somewhere. =/

I couldnt advice anything exactly like Alkonost as they're pretty special, but do try some Arkona (rus one), Butterfly Temple, Svarga or Temnozor.

I tried to like them but couldnt. Nothing particularly good or bad standing out in them, but you know, there are just so many better stuff to listen to, in my opinion. =p

So I finally listened to the not-so-new-anymore Turisas album "The Varangian Way" today, and was kinda disapointed. I really dig some moments, but then it gets lost in some semi 70s progressive rock kinda thing. A bit confusing, but maybe it only need a couple listens.

Listened to Finist's Nightmares from 2006, and really, I can't help but love these guys. Their NS Power Metal is still as cheesy, eventhough better played/sung. They're mostly covering their songs and other band's ones, on this, but it's cool. Among those is my favourite Nokturnal Mortum's Twilightfall one, On The Wings Of Scarlet Sunset, and they give the kickass ending solo all the honours it deserve. The ending Manowar cover is pretty hilarious, too.

Listening to the new Drudkh now. Sounds good so far ~

edit: and yeah, It *is* pretty awesome indeed. <3

I really dislike Korpiklaani ...

Sup Serv. Try some Trollfest, Arkona or even some Pagan Reign. There are a ton more if you're ok with a harsher sound.

Pretty much all metal is pretentious self-indulgent wanking.
I dunno. It could be said of pretty much all music if you go that way. =/

Started to listen to Arvinger again, and wondering if anyone dig them.

They're usually dissed because of their Viking Metal with Christian lyrics, but I think they're really awesome. Helgards Fall is a great album with a very rich atmosphere.

DO GET their seventies albums, though, they are their very best (other than maybe Painkiller for which I have soft spot for). Stained Class, Sad Wings and Sin After Sin are among the finest heavy metal albums of all time.
So fucking agreed. Sad Wings of Destiny is 100% awesomeness. Though yeah, Painkiller rawks.

Get some Black Sabbath while you're at it. =p

Oh, and Turisas and Finntroll are in Paris soon !!! \m/

Man, every time I turn around there's some wicked show you're about to see. Fuck Paris. >=(
heh, and we get like 5% of what Germany gets. ;_;

So after Arvinger, I've been listening to some more "Christian Black Metal". Yeah, I was surprised to discover an entire scene hidden there, and it's full of good shit too. Bands like Antestor, Horde, Slechtvalk, Vaakevandring or Crimson Moonlight definitely have something special going on. I'd be curious to hear more opinions.

Still contemplating going to that Ragnarok festival in Germany this year ...

Cliché? Black metal is not compatible with christianity, period. It's simply ridiculous, it's like having satanic gospel or death metal about love and puppies.
My database lists Horde as "black" metal: note the quotes. Horde uses bm aesthetics, but has none of the meaning. It's a complete joke, and they also happen to suck despite the christianity anyway.

Ah-ha, a band that I saw twice that you didn't. :P
I really don't think the lyrical content is that important as long as the music is good. Of course the lyrics are going to influence the general atmosphere, and "Black" / Unblack / White (lol) metal does sound different, but I happen to like it.

Seriously, I realize Horde is purely satirical, but did you honestly gave stuff like Arvinger or Antestor a chance ?

And bleh, how are Moonsorrow live btw ? I really can't imagine.

Sorvali, Kishin ?

How ya doing, buddy?

I get what you say, Morrigan, but then the question of why these people choose to do what they do must be asked. Of course, I guess it could be said that it's just a reactionary preachy thing but meh ... Antestor exists since 1991, and listening to their albums, there's no doubt they put a lot of themselves into their music. To me, they actually find their way of expression in "black metal", and it's not just evangelism and provocation.

And when you think of it, maybe Unblack Metal should actually be a genre, if lyrical content is so defining of what Black Metal is.

Anyway, it's cool that EM still lists them.

Hey thanks Vemp. Good stuff !

Like Ziggy said, why are those christians so feeble that they can't even form their own musical identity and have to piggy-back on what was created out of hatred for them? Just goes to show how pathetic they are. If I made satanic gospel music, I'd expect to be rightfully ridiculed as a gimmicky poseur without a shred of creativity or honesty. People would see the proselytizing fraud for what it is.
Yeah, let's disregard the huge influence of Christian "classical" music on ... what really ? ... all modern music ?

And Christian music came from something else itself, which came from something else ... etc ...

But you can choose to see the world as a bunch of small isolated tiny boxes if you wish ~

You forgot "technically competent but flat, dull, emotionless and without any personality whatsoever" somewhere in that sentence.

??? Did you per chance forgot to read the "those" word from my post, which clearly showed I was specifically indicating the christians who tried to make "black" metal? Because otherwise, that's one hell of a strawman you got there.
Yeah, what I was saying is basically that I don't believe in lyrical themes defining music. Oh well we're just running in circles now. =j

* After a couple listens, I can tell it's not as good as their latest. Still pretty awesome though.

So I'm just back from the Turisas concert ...

We arrived at 7:30pm as noted on the tickets and the booking site. They were playing Heart of Turisas so we rushed in.

At the end of the song, they said "thank you ! see you next year !!!"

We looked at each others with WTF faces. The 5 of us came just for them.

And they actually left. Apparently this concert place is famous for starting it's first parts early.

The rest of the show was Annihilator and Iced Earth so we GTFO

So mad

I might get shot down for suggesting this, but I know the J-Pop thread has a little introduction with a list of bands people might want to check out if they want to start looking into the music more. Anyone interested in making one for this one? I love metal, but I admit hands down to not knowing an awful lot about all the bands that are out there. Maybe pitching together we can make a nice dandy list and some descriptions for people to check out. Just a thought!
The problem is that we'd get either something over-simplified or something over-complicated. There have been many instances of people asking "I like xxxx band what do you recommend in the same style ?", and I think it works better that way.

Browsing Encyclopaedia Metallum: The Metal Archives by genre works fine too, or even looking at the similar bands in Last.fm. Also, talking to people in metal DC hubs, but not everyone uses DC. :3

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
