It's basically a game with very simple controls and objectives, but it gets VERY hard. It's dependent on pure skill, basically you have to roll to the finish line in a stage without falling off the edge, and it can get very tricky, thin platforms, time limits etc.

That DEFINATELY sounds a lot like Marble Madness then. It was this old school 8-bit NES game that was exactly like that, and as it progressed, eventually got hard as hell. my guess however is that SMB isnt loaded with the things that made Marble Madness excruciatingly annoying, hence why the franchise seems so popular. I'll have to eventually check it out.
