Don't get me wrong now - I'm not the biggest fan of Toriyama now myself (I used to be stupid for his stuff but now I like to think I have better tastes in what I like VS what I dont like.) I was looking at the character designs for Dragon Quest 8 and something caught my eye.
When Akira Toriyama doesn't butchify all of his characters, his stuff can actually look really nice and expressive; stands out a lot more from your usual "big eyed manga" designs. The biggest problem that I've always had with his work was that all his characters look like they can bench press teenagers be they young, old, male or female. :P The early DB influence can definately be seen in his earlier Dragonquest work and during the period where he was doing the series heavily it was especially evident (DQ 3-6). But after the series fully finished, I think his designs kind of toned down a slight bit. 8 had some of the most varied character designs I've seen come from him. His females looked female, his fat people looked fat, Kid Yangus didnt look like some kind of chibi hercules. I dunno. Then again I think I need to see more of his artwork post 7 to form a better opinion, which isn't much.
I've gotten wildly off topic... :P
There's nowhere I can't reach.
