My guess would be that it fails due to how that PHP script is displaying the image. Why do I say this? Because running a test off my computer, redirecting to a .png file (Location header) works just fine here. Seeing how the image displays, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess GD's responsible, which means it probably won't work here.
EDIT: Removed PHP script link as my server is now offline. Of course, knowing me I'm missing some stupid vB functionality that's blocking it. Jam it back in, in the dark.
