Simply put: Exercise before bed will energize you, only do it a few hours before bed; smoking, whilst a relaxant, is also a stimulant, don't do it before bed; lavender on the pillow or in a bag under your pillow will help immensely, as will music you know well and listen to often.
DO NOT bother with sleeping pills as trying to get to sleep without them later is a fucking nightmare.
Most importantly, it's all about routine. Go to bed at the same time every night, listen to the same music, do the same boring pre-bed ritual every night. ROUTINE, ROUTINE, ROUTINE! Get on it sunshine!
Jam it back in, in the dark.
