You don't necessarily have to play the first one to play the second one, some of the skills from EOI have been removed and most of them have been tweaked in the sequel.
I'd probably forget about the first one and just play the second one because the problems in EOI have been addressed in EOII and the new classes are great. The interface has seen some great improvements from EOI, allowing you to compare and equip gear from the item shop, autobattle, and more mapping tools.

Definitely pick up the first one if you have the chance though.
