I also second Total Annihilation. Nothing quite like it before it, nothing quite like it since. Especially I loved playing without fog of war (so that the defences get ample chance to blast holes into the legion of ships moving ominously in your direction...), and the battles were HUGE. I also loved the fact that Cavedog gave us so much extra stuff--new units, new maps, new missions. It was exciting to install new units and to get to try 'em out!
I think TA was probably the first game I ever bought...
Starcraft is great, but it gave me more the feeling of an expansive rock-paper-scissors game, rather than war. TA really felt like combat. Plus the music kicks ass.
That's a great story Mina, by the way.
And yeah, Supreme Commander is the only game that I can imagine changing my mind about TA being the best game ever. I'm so excited about it! Come on, 2007!
EDIT: If you were underwhelmed by the AI in TA btw, there's a fanmade AI that is pretty killer called "Mostly Harmless". I have a pretty tough time beating it on smaller maps (with limited metal). Of course, I have a pretty tough time beating anybody on TA, but never mind that. =D
My other most-played PC game might be Worms 2...
Jam it back in, in the dark.
