If you want to edit, fuck the DVD/HD recorders—too much compression and it makes editing a pain (especially if you have a Mac). As long as you're using good tape stock and keep your heads clean, you shouldn't have any problems with MiniDV—just don't use LP mode. Ever.

Then again, I've never paid any attention camcorders that weren't at least prosumer level, so I don't really know much about the low price range stuff. I do know that the DVD/HD ones can be a pain though.
