Eh, if you really wanna go across the country without flying my advice is to either drive or take the train.
I used to take the train all the time when I lived in California and wanted to go visit family in downtown San Diego. Even including the added time to walk where I was going from the station I still got to my destination much faster than I did when I drove. Jam it back in, in the dark.
