I think this question sort of boils down to are you a half cup full or half cup empty sort of person...
Not even remotely, actually. This insinuates that someone will only diss or only prop, rather than simply giving a nod to things they agree with or a quick dismissal of things that are ridiculously inane, or dull. It's not really a matter of "do you diss or do you prop" it's a matter of what do you like and what do you not like in a given post.

That way people would actually have to think a bit and come up with a reason to prop or diss a post. This would make it more useful I feel as well and prevent a lot of spam and flamming that usually takes place in (and disrupts) a thread.
Um, no they wouldn't? A diss saying "you suck" takes pretty much the same amount of effort as just dissing. It also says the exact same thing: your post sucked. Your fairly well spoken and I appreciate the effort to get a discourse going, but your point is incredibly shaky and poorly thought out.

For instance: You know what avoids a lot of spammy flame comments of "fuck you BZ, you're an idiot"? A diss button. Some things just aren't worth the effort of a well-thought out reply. Sometimes all a comment requires in response is a quick little tap of a button that says all you need to.

I don't necessarily mean that the individual solely engages in one or the other, but at some level I do feel they tend gravitate towards propping or dissing.
I disagree. I think most people will either use the system or not use the system. Though I can certainly imagine a situation wherein a zero poster would prefer to diss rather than engage a more established member in debate.

Quote:
Case in point Knighthawk's seemingly benign comment about you which somehow inspired 37 disses (and his own unique animated tile, name, and avatar). I really can't see most people taking any personal offense to his comment, and I doubt you took much either yet it was almost like a chain reaction and the disses kept accumulating.
I didn't take offense at the comment, though I certainly rolled my eyes and shook my head. The comment was such a ridiculously idiotic statement it wasn't worth getting riled up over. Knight was deliberately trolling, which is why the rather extreme reaction was taken. You should also note that, though a large number of disses were handed out legitimately, a sizable portion were handed out because an admin caught wind of the obviously ridiculous troll attempt and decided to redirect any attempted prop or diss into a slap in the face to knighthawk for his childish attempt to derail a thread. So, unfortunately, your foundation doesn't exist.

Quote:
On that note, it is very rare to see a post get that many props, outside the file-sharing areas of course. (Please provide links to posts that contradict this assumption if they exist)
I don't have the links on hand, but a_lurker's rather famous slaughter of someone in Political Palace earned props that got up around that number, as have several others. It does happen.

Quote:
I am sort of under the impression that people here, like society in general, are more willing to "punish" those for making mistakes than to "praise" them for doing good.
I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you yet again. I tend to see far more propping than dissing, as a general rule (the last few days not withstanding). Even myself, widely considered among the biggest pricks on these boards, has offered well over double the amount of props as disses.

Quote:
...well maybe you could require a minimum of ten words or something describing why you dissed the post to prevent the "You Suck" comments. I do think people would put more thought into propping or dissing a post though if other individuals could see their reasoning for doing so. It would also prevent the lemming effect that happens quite often when an influential person disses (or props) a post.
I think you miss the point of the diss button. If you have ten words or more to say on the subject, you don't diss. At that point you reply to the actual comment. The diss button serves a completely different function than you seem to think it does.

In short: You've utterly missed the point.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Um, no. You face infraction if you rip someone apart without dealing with the subject at hand, but that would be why you spend more than 10 words doing it. So long as you're decently intelligent in how you say what you have to say, you're fine. If all you're capable of is "lol fag I disagree" then hey, diss button. Right there. And now we're back to the beginning. Then again, if all you're capable of is that, we really don't want you around anyway.

You don't seem to really grasp how things work around here yet. I suggest you lurk a little more, because really you're doing a great impression of Don Quixote right now.

Which is too bad, because you seem capable of much more.

Don't you think we have enough of those?
Really? I have to act like a pedant for you, Amiga? Honestly?

Fine. Lurk more in the community, take part in conversations, before making threads about board systems.

I didn't feel the need to add that last part because Otur has already taken part in other discussions. I hope this has eased your troubled mind.

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?
