Borderlands - Shootan and Lootan

Borderlands. Is it a roleplaying game? Is it a shooter?

It's Both.

Do you enjoy tabulating spreadsheets of the optimum equipment combinations usable in a given situation?

Do you enjoy blowing the shit out of things with the biggest gun you can get your grubby little hands on?

You should enjoy this game.

Barring any catastrophic "wow the previews didn't indicate that" failure, this is looking to be an interesting hybrid of two seemingly incompatible genres. It also has a really interesting cel-shaded art style. The addition of 4 player coop is just the icing on the cake, really, especially when Steam lets you do this:

Hell yes, 4 player coop for $33.75 a person. That's a pretty sweet deal.

Incidentally, Skills and I are looking for 2 more fools friends to split the cost with. I'm looking for a PC game I can get into, Skills is a faggot, everyone's a winner! The game is activating on Steam in 6 days, comes out on 360 tomorrow, and rumor has it Best Buy's going to be selling the PC version anyway tomorrow as well. Happy fragging!

Well, that ended quickly. Still, it's a great deal, find friends to buy this game with! The reviews have been pretty kind to it so far:

1UP - B+
Giant Bomb - 4/5
IGN - 8.8

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I'm in it to win it, buddies.

I was just wondering recently who I could get together to buy this game with me.
Awesome. Anybody else feel like playing with us and with any other GFFers who happen to pick this game up?

Also, for anyone who's worried about their computer:

o OS: Windows XP/Vista
o Processor: 2.4 Ghz or equivalent processor
o Memory: 1GB System RAM (2GB recommended with Vista)
o Graphics: 256mb video ram or better (GeForce 8 series or higher/Radeon R8xx series)
o Hard Drive: 8 GB or more free space
o Sound: Windows compatible sound card

Those are the minimum system specs. For a new game these are actually pretty good.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I think what Term means is that stores were originally going ot be selling the PC version early, but 2K/Gearbox got wind of it and told the stores to knock it off.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

The multiplayer is drop in drop out. The host's current quest layout is what everyone else gets to play on, but if you join someone's game and beat quests beyond where you are in singleplayer, when you reach that point in singleplayer those quests are still considered done. Your character in single and multi is the same guy, not separated like Diablo.

And yes, the loot is Diablo-style "Pistol with +x% damage and fire bullets and a scope and yada yada". The game advertises millions of guns in the same way Diablo can advertise millions of items, they look to mostly fall into standard shooter archetypes. The wacky bullet types and the whole appeal of every few minutes getting a new BEST GUN EVER look to be the fun of the loot system.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

The PC version appears to have about a 10% success rate in terms of people getting connections. I don't have the greatest hardware ever but after turning Vsync on I managed to get a very playable and steady framerate... at 800x600 resolution. Sigh. Still, the game is fun despite the blurriness.

Skills asked for what I see when I play on my apparently shitty laptop:

It actually looks worse than this because my monitor tries to stretch to fit vertically, leaving me with a lot of blurriness that I actually kinda got used to.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

F8. One of the many key bindings you can only discover by browsing through the ini files which are stored in My Documents.

Big annoying warning box for big annoying "feature"!

Check out %user%/documents/my games/borderlands/SaveData/Player.wsg! That has your GameSpy password stored in plaintext! It is 2009 and we still have devs doing this? Jesus.

I dunno, I'd rather not put my computer on a virtual LAN that any random fuck could connect to.

Well, I was thinking less in the game sense and more in general security sense. Any word on just how much access one gets to a computer when you're connected using this thing?

Because it was cheaper than the 360 version and I helped 3 other people also get it for cheap?

In his defense, the set up he's got should run it much better than it does. I understand his graphics chipset is a touch underpowered but by no means should it only be capable of that.
I mean.

2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450
4 gigs of RAM

What would have ever made me think "Gee this will only run this game at 800x600!" I even tried the Batman Arkham Asylum demo since that's another recent UT3 game and it ran at 1280x768 perfectly fine. Borderlands maxes out at about 10 fps when I'm staring at a wall and reaches slideshow status the second bullets start flying.

So using both cores can actually HINDER performance? Huh.

Additional Spam:
Windowed actually makes things less stable, and manually setting the processes' affinity to one core didn't seem to change much.

From what I've gathered it seems like if you leave a session without using the exit game button (i.e. accepting someone's invite) things get dicey about your levels.

And keep in mind it's not that you level down to 1, but you lose all of your skill points. Your skills are at 0, you're still at your old level, and there's no way of getting those skill points back again. It cripples your character.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

Also not too fond of how enemies will respawn if you leave a zone and come back, but all of the ammo and treasure chests won't.
If you exit out of the game and come back in, though, everything DOES come back.

Aim better?

Enemies drop shit tonnes of ammo.
Well it depends on the gun. That rifle I was using when we were playing yesterday is fantastic but dear LORD does it suck through ammo fast.
