The top of my list might be predictable, but fuck it.

35 points - Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

This game has no right to be any good. It's a relaunch of a hilarious disasterfuck that was, in turn, a sequel to a mediocre at best online Final Fantasy. And yet, somehow, they managed to make an intensely entertaining game. A massive variety of things to do, a wonderful localization effort and responsive (eventually) developers add up to the first MMO that's captured my attention for any reasonable length of time since early WoW.

25 points - Papers, Please

Papers, Please is honestly one of the most depressing games I've ever played. It presents you with all kinds of just awful scenarios, where you have to take people at their word, and... doesn't judge you for how you decide to act. It just leaves it up to your own self loathing to do that for you. It reminds me too much of my current job for me to play it anymore, and simply by virtue of the fact that it elicits that kind of reaction in me, that visceral gut depression, I consider it art. I love this game because I hate playing it.

15 points - The Room

The Room is iOS gaming done right. It's an honest to god tactile game, with such an attention to detail and good puzzle design. It's not difficult, really, but it doesn't need to be; the fun comes entirely from the feeling of discovery, poking and prodding at what's in front of you, like an extremely focused version of Myst.

15 points - Rogue Legacy

A roguelike platformer with Metroidvania-ish roots and tight as hell controls, Rogue Legacy sucked up way more of my time than I care to admit. It's an awesome example of how you can combine a few things that have been done before and make the whole package feel fresh again.

10 points - The Stanley Parable

Meta done right. What starts out seeming like a droll commentary on office boredom turns into... just about everything, sometimes all at once. I've never felt the need to explore a story the way Stanley Parable invites you to, and it was really fun while it lasted.

Games I'm surprised I didn't give points to:

BioShock Infinite
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
GTA V
Super Mario 3D World
Pokemon X/Y
Resogun

How ya doing, buddy?
