You probably have to set the game so you're playing in windowed mode to be able to cmd-tab (er- arrow hitting wall) from a game to another program. I've never really played WOW, but with a lot of game you can achieve this either by holding cmd (er- clover) while opening it or inside the game's option menu.
Edit: According to this, cmd (dammit- clover)+m should switch between fullscreen and windowed mode in-game. There are also apps that can allow you to stay in fullscreen mode and switch listed on the page I linked to (check under the heading keyboard issues). Jam it back in, in the dark.  Juggle dammit
