Because I use my consoles for gaming and play only on a PC what can't be played properly on a console, there's never been the need to upgrade my old PC, and when it gave up the ghost, I bought a medium-class new one. So I couldn't care less about stunning 3D graphics - give me a good 2D strategy or roleplaying game, and I'm set.

The most addicting PC gaming experience for me is Age of Wonders, replaced by AoW Shadow Magic when it came out. In my whole life I've never played any game for a longer overall time than these two. I'm sure there are better strategy games, gameplay-wise, but the captivating art design, the ear candy music, all those little ideas and touches that form a collection of the very best of fantasy staples, coupled with the fact that I'm a sucker for western high fantasy and don't care for 3D animation when there's simply no need for a third dimension (actually I think 2D looks much more evocative and artistic), make the AoW series the essence of fantasy gaming for me, regardless of genre.

The Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series finish second and third (despite the atrocious pathfinding), and I bemoan the fact that these were the last great 2D roleplaying experiences. I don't get why everything has to be 3D, especially in the roleplaying genre. But I guess it depends if you started out with 2D and watched it grow up or if you belong to the 3D generation. I feel old.

We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not true.
