working as an educator doesn't mean you only work when you're giving your lessons, also have the marking of work and in colleges/universities you're expected to make time to meet up with students who are having trouble. some also have to organise timetables and what the syllabus will have for that year/term, also how it'll be presented, and these days students can get pretty violent at some instituitions.
one of my tutors has to spend his summers doing extra university courses so that he can keep up with what he has to teach and with our views, he also had to timetable our labs and the marking criteria etc and go through 50-100 lab books a week. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
same, when i was in london, everyone had the lecturers' cellphone numbers so we could contact them anywhere at anytime, you could also walk into their offices whenever they were there without having to make an appointment or go up to them during lunch etc.
for your information, i am currently at my second university, though my current one isn't as good as my last one the lecturers here still expect you to contact them outside of class. also, have you ever tried to timetable a schedule for 200-400 students who aren't necessarily all on the same course doing the same modules and take into account the timestables of all the staff needed as well as the costs of hiring the postgrad students to help out? at my secondary school it took an entire summer for 94 students covering over 20 subjects just to make sure everyone was able to take the courses they wanted to while fitting in the necessary teaching time as well as making sure it didn't affect the staff's timetable for the rest of the school. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
