A large portion of those folks play Final Fantasy XI, a haven for the largest concentration of elitist pricks ever conceived.

JAPAN ONRY!
I played FFXI for one summer right after it came out, and there was just too much I didn't like about it to keep me from enjoying it for any longer. The economy was in shambles the minute the game launched, too much of a grind to do anything, complete dependence on rare drops or the auction house for any sort of equipment upgrades, all kinds of stuff. I did have a really good experience with a very nice high leveled player who basically showed me the ropes for nothing at all, and on the whole the community wasn't too bad, but the gameplay just wasn't what I expected.
My most annoying experiences probably come from WoW, since ended up playing it more. I had an account until about a year and a half ago with a bunch of my friends. We got pretty far, I had nearly all purples on my priest and we raided Molten Core and Nafarian's Lair pretty regularly, but my biggest annoyances were the people who stole from the guild. You never really saw it coming, sometimes they were people who had been on several raids, sometimes they were new, but every once and a while you'd get people who steal chests or items from bosses they weren't supposed to loot (the boss with the chest right before Ragnaros was a big one, can't think of his name...). Sometimes they'd play it off as an accident, sometimes they'd disband right there and hearth out, but I still never understood why people do this. They tarnish their rep forever over an item and ruin other people's fun. I guess some people just get too caught up in chasing that brass ring (or tradeable purple) that they lose sight of what's important.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
