Spoiler:
2005
Week 014 :: iS: internal section original soundtrack <Shinji Hosoe> [23] User's Entry - Come Again :: 7-8th?
--God, I almost forgot about this one. A former member (Citizen Solo) said he awarded points to it because the track sounded so in love with itself so he’ll make it a threesome or twosome, depending on how you see it.
Week 020 :: Racing Lagoon Original Soundtrack <Takahito Eguchi> [2.23] Diablo Battle :: 7-8th?
--No idea why I nominated this, maybe because it shocked me the first time. I still think it’s an interesting track. I’m thinking of nominating another track from this soundtrack.
Week 026 :: “Touhou Youyou Yume ~Perfect Cherry Blossom~ (PC Game Rip) <ZUN> - Border of Life (dBU Arr.)” :: 3rd
--Lol, later I found out this was an ineligible nomination, but that’s because I didn’t really know anything back then. It’s solid rockin’ and has some variety to offer as well. This track is actually a slightly modified version of t11 from Necromanza, that was only available on the website of dBu.
Week 032 :: Touhou Koumakyou ~Embodiment of Scarlet Devil~ (PC Game Rip) <ZUN (Junya Ota)> [09] The Locked Girl ~ The Girl’s Secret Room :: 5-6th?
--For some reason there are many good arrangements of this theme. So that means the basic idea can’t be that bad.
Week 037 :: Touhou Eiyashou ~Imperishable Night~ (PC Game Rip) <ZUN (Junya Ota)> [07] Plain Asia (TRR Orig.) :: 8th
--The piano run is not bad, but in retrospect it ultimately lacks something. This track was my half-assed attempt to record from the midi output.
Week 042 :: Arc the Lad Piano Album <Keiichi Oku, Masahiroh Andoh> [02] Arc :: 3rd
--Probably the best track from an all around very good piano solo album. It has everything that makes a piano track interesting; tempo, style, delicacy.
2006
Week 047 :: ”Touhou Youyoumu ~Perfect Cherry Blossom~ (PC Game Rip) <ZUN> - A Maiden’s Illusionary Funeral ~ Necrofantasy (Shinzo Densan Orig.)” :: 4-5th?
--It doesn’t diverge heavily or at all from the original, except for the synth output but this makes it another slightly ineligible entry. The original synth would have been eardrum rape for you, so I chose this.
Week 051 :: [i]Phantasy Star Online Original Soundtrack <Hideaki Kobayashi, Fumie Kumatani> [16] After the Story Part 2[i/] :: 4th
--The string climax is still one of the best things I’ve ever heard. I generally like Phantasy Star for the dark, twisted creativity, but the more emotional tracks are convincing as well.
Week 055 :: Raystorm Neu Tanz Mix <Tamayo Kawamoto> [05] Aquarium :: 1st
--Lol, I never expected this to place 1st, because I randomly picked it up from another contest, seeing that I liked it fairly. It’s a bit drawn out and depends on its development, but yeah it has a rare feel.
Week 058 :: Highly Responsive to Prayers Special Kakiden Arrange <ZUN (Junya Ota)> [11] Now, die for the debt you have accumulated:: 5th
--The sound quality is marred, but the foundation is not bad.
Medium Break
Week 067 :: Anno 1602 (Game Rip) <Dreamweaver> [05] Dreamer :: 5th
--A tame track I picked up from having played that game. It’s soothing really, but nothing that special I guess, although regarding the composition it’s not too mundane either.
Week 070 :: Anno 1602 (Game Rip) <Dreamweaver> [01] Ballad of Hope :: 4th
--It’s a bit more enganging than the other track, but pretty much has the same traits written all over it.
Week 073 :: Armored Core 3 Silent Line Original Soundtrack <Tsukasa Saito> [19] Artificial Line :: 8th
--A really oppressive track that impresses me with its density, although this is pretty much all that it’s got. I kinda see why it places last.
Week 076 :: Armored Core 3 Silent Line Soundtrack <Tsukasa Saito> [18] Lapse of Time :: 8th
--Uhh, I guess this soundtrack is an acquired taste, at least I think it works better as a whole. But for SotW you’d need MEMORABLE tracks, and that’s hardly what it is.
Week 079 :: Genso Sangokushi II Original Sound Track <UserJoy Technology Co.,Ltd> [14] Tong Guan Waterway - Rain on the Mountain :: 3rd
--From a rather melancholy soundtrack, I nominated this simplistic and “droppy” track. I like it, the soundscape is very good. I randomly picked this album up when it was posted in the “Obscure VGM Sharers Front” thread.
2007
Week 082 :: Mushihimesama Original Sound Track <Shinji Hosoe, Manabu Namiki> [16] ---Shinju Heading to the Forest - Stage 1 <Arranged> :: 3rd
I found this track to be quite interchangable with the original, though now in retrospect I think the original is an inchy pinchy better.
HUEG BREAK
Week 106 :: Cradle -Touhou Gegakushi Den- <nagi, ZUN (Junya Ota)> [05] Nostalgic Blood of the East ~ Old World :: 4th
--If you’re ever interested in doujin music, this album is not a bad start. “nagi” basically amplifies what I like about the original composition. It’s a peaceful piece, that can be perceived to be a bit stretched though. Very close 4th, since it’s tied with 3rd point-wise.
Week 109 :: Faraway Moon <zts, Abito Torai> [07] if it dies rather -short.rm- :: 2nd
--I love this track, it’s a familiar genre but emotions are exploding here. I actually mistook it for an arrangement of a track in the bloody hairband scene in the related anime.
Week 112 :: Cradle -Touhou Gegakushi Den- <Nauts, ZUN (Junya Ota)> [04] Apparitions Stalk the Night :: 3rd
--Hmm, it’s just a good pimpy track.
Week 115 :: Sephiroth <zts, ZUN (Junya Ota)> [01] Oriental Memory of Forgathering Dream ~phantasmagoria~ :: 4th
--This appeared in the closest SotW voting and placed 4th aka 18, 18, 18, 17. The track is very creative and delicate, but can get a bit lengthy around 6 minutes.
2008
Week 118 :: Touhou Shikouhana ~Seasonal Dream Vision~ <ESTi (Jin-Bea Park), ZUN (Junya Ota)> [05] Illusionary Summer, Ghostly Summer :: 3rd
--A rather eccentric track. I admit I liked it better the first times around.
Week 123 :: ixion <zts, Shinya Ishikawa> [08] a reticent voice of song -conditional duty- :: 1st
--This was the song that got some commotion about its eligibility status. It’s a weirdo song in a really unique, varied and excellent soundtrack. You’re missing something if you haven’t listened to it (the soundtrack) yet, just for general knowledge at least.
Week 126 :: Touhou Fuujinroku ~ Mountain of Faith <ZUN (Junya Ota> [08] Fall of Fall ~ Autumnal Waterfall :: 7th
--Um yeah, I don’t know what happened here, since I really like the track and think it’s pretty unique for a ZUN composition. But my perception of Touhou music is skewed anyway, because I’ve played the games too much and I am engaged in a project listening to touhou arranges very often.
Week 129 :: AEON <zts, Magome Togoshi> [04] thin clothes –ETHER :: 5th
--I liked this engaging and spiritful track. It sounds so much like summer, beaches, splashing water and thin clothes. Compare it to the original to see the difference.
Week 132 :: planetarian original soundtrack <Shinji Orito> [11] Human Warrior :: 4th
--I think I nominated this for the interesting cyborg sound. It needs a while to get going. While I think a more melodic approach would make it more memorable, it doesn’t really fit this mechanical image.
Week 135 :: eleison <zts, NUMBER 201> [01] Days -a conclusion- :: 2nd
--I have no idea how to characterize this track, it’s mish-mash of ups and downs in the atmosphere. I needed rather long before I really liked it.
