No, I think your case is a very rare one, because nowadays everything could just be game music, and probably nothing would surprise if it turned out to be that genre.

With me it was more like when I heard some VGM albums, and couldn't believe such music existed at all. On a similar note though, I have heard VGM at places I didn't expect. In an online-gaming internet cafe, they have been playing all sort of vocal VGM, such as Eyes on Me and the like from other games. You wouldn't believe it, Final Fantasy vocal music is pretty appreciated outside of this forum. Another time was when I heard the ringing tone of my friend's mobile phone, it was playing the melody of To Zarnakand.
