One of the first books that I've read that comes to mind along some of your themes is Sophie's Choice by William Styron. Also, I would recommend Truman Capote's In Cold Blood and Norman Mailer's The Executioner's Song. Mailer's book is quite a hefty read, yet it's very cut-and-dry in its style so it's also easy to get through.
