Not always the case. My roommate thinks the dishwasher can clean off anything, even if it is caked on or stuck solid particles. Ours isn't some fancy powerful new dishwasher that shoots jets in all directions.
Needless to say, being the kitchen nazi I am, I tend to do a little precleaning to remove things like sauce residue or anything that is solid. Grease I leave alone. That way I don't end up with strange post-dishwashing things that are caked with crud.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
