Whatever you do, don't get the Manga Entertainment versions of the two movies. They have non-anamorphic, blurry, washed-out, completely worthless transfers and don't have the 5.1 renewal audio. Bandai Visual USA will be releasing both films (1st this month, 2nd in July) with remastered video and the 5.1 and I would strongly suggest you get those versions instead.

I watched them many years ago but didn't find them that enthralling much thanks to this fact. Some time ago I took a chance and got the remastered/5.1 Taiwanese R3 DVDs for them and was completely floored. The animation, art and attention to detail is simply stunning. Needless to say they are both now two of my favourite films regardless of genre. I would also strongly recommend (actually I would almost consider it a prerequisite if you want to get anything out of them) that you watch the original 7-part OVA first, to get a feel for it and get to know all the characters and settings. They are called 'The Movie' after all.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I'm a videophile so it might have something to do with that. (Now I just hope that all the OVAs and TV series would get remastered, that would be a dream come true.) Either way, there is really no reason to get the Manga versions when the re-releases are just around the corner.

As for WXIII being the last, I almost think so, considering what a near-fiasco it turned out to be. Production dragged out, it took years longer than expected before it was finished and despite that the end result was not all that great. Don't get me wrong, I very much like detective stories and it's an enjoyable one; animation is superb too. But I think generally it was just a bit too detached from what people knew as 'Patlabor' and after this slight failure it's questionable whether they'll ever dare try to resurrect the franchise again. In the end though, it was all worth it just for MiniPato.

There's a comparison of the old Manga disc and the remaster of the first movie on this site. It's quite a difference if you ask me, especially when you scale the pictures to full screen. The comparison is between the R1 and R2, and I can't guarantee that the new DVD release will look quite that good as it hasn't been released yet, but that's the master they're basing it on so it's very much likely.

Both films will also get released in drool-worthy 10,000 unit limited editions which will feature a box, an extras disc, a 300-page book with the full, translated storyboards and another translated 180-page book with essays, interviews, art galleries etc. The downside is that the price is a massive $89.99 each (so around $60-$70 online.)

BTW, does anyone happen to have the Japanese version of the manga and could tell me if there is any significant amount furigana in it? I'd really like to read it but since Viz dropped it a long time ago and there are no scanlations from what I can tell, I don't really have any other options. Unfortunately my kanji skills are almost equal to zero so if there's no furigana I'm screwed.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Getting hit by customs sucks allright, and is basically the reason I haven't pre-ordered this yet. But $78? Pfffft, that's nothing. I'd end up paying $62.99 + $6.98 shipping + 3.5% duty + 25% VAT + $10 (fee you have to pay for the pleasure of getting to pay all the other fees) = $100.50.

Well, very, very basic as I only took one year Japanese. Had I wasted my three high-school years on French instead of German the French volumes would probably have been a lot easier.

Still, I'm thinking of getting a Japanese set; Animaxis currently has a complete set of the re-releases for about $50. Only problem is that their shipping fees are exorbitant so maybe I should ask yesasia if they can stock them first. At least I will probably not have to worry about customs since it seems they usually ignore packages containing books (even though they technically should charge 6% VAT.)

I took a couple of screens of Shinobu from Minipato to use as sig.

From my favourite part, I just love the deep voice of Sakakibara Yoshiko. ^_^; (plus the Oshiiness of it all)

So I popped in the first movie again last night and I swear, it just keeps getting more amazing every time I see it; luckily the movie has aged really well. I also took a closer look on some of the background art this time and they should really release an artbook of it or something, just look at these scenes from the detective part (I just spoilered them as to not ruin the board look):

Spoiler:

Especially in the last scene, the architecture, art and composition is so perfect that it's scary.

Also here's a bonus pic of the Type X-0 and Oota with a mild case of frostbite:

I took two screenshots of Kanuka from that scene, you can use them if you want:

About the soundtracks, what are those TV & New OVA discs? Are they part of some collected box or are they the same as the 'PHASE' soundtracks? This is what I have in my folder:

I believe I have 'PHASE II' somewhere as well, but the quality was really bad (<128kbps).

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Well, I can now answer my own question about the manga. I downloaded an archive with all 22 volumes, and it seems like it indeed has furigana for practically every kanji. Unfortunately, I grossly overestimated my abilities and I find it's taking me forever to understand even with the furigana and a bunch of web dictionaries. All those で, に, して, んだろう and ってs will be my ruin. ;_;

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Qwarky: I downloaded the manga from a P2P network called Share, the archive is about 1 GB. If you don't want to bother with it yourself I could probably upload it somewhere, although I'm going away for a week or so tomorrow, so it would have to wait.

Well, I ended up ordering the LE from Axel Music. Price is almost the full $90 (I had a coupon for $12 from previous purchases though) but it's guaranteed customs-free within the EU and since they have a scan of the back I think they have it in stock and will ship it on Monday. I thought about Amazon or DVD Pacific, but with a heavy package like that I'd get hit by customs for sure and end up paying even more.

About the manga, how do you want it? Is there a good FTP or something where I could upload it to? Or should I just zip the volumes individually and use rapidshare or something?

I was speaking idiomatically.

No, the whole series is around 1GB (also already mentioned .) I think I'll split it with two volumes in each archive, then it'll fit nicely within rapidshare's 100MB/file limit.

Here's the first zip:

[Yuuki Masami] Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor - Volume 01-02

This is my first time uploading to rapidshare so let me know if it works and I can upload the rest over the next couple of days.

Here's the next part:

In my experience, it's been that when you download more than 30MB or something like that, they cut you off and you have to wait a while before you're allowed to download again. Usually it's around an hour, so you could probably get a couple of packs per day. According to rapidshare the files are deleted 30 days after no downloads, so they should be fine for now.

And I would be interested in any Takada artbooks with Patlabor art in them (haven't seen KOR or anything else she's worked on so I have no real need for those, yet.)

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Hey, you got yours too! I got number 1775 by the way. And yes, unfortunately they didn't include the old 2.0 track, and no it was not because of the dub, it could easily have fit there anyway. I'm not exactly sure why they would want to leave it out, maybe it was just a dumb decision. Still, I think you're being too negative here, at least if you have a capable sound system the 5.1 track is totally the better experience! Flipping between the tracks (on the R3) during the final storm the old one is like 'pssshuu' and the new one is like 'KSHSHSHSH, WIND BLOWING, RAIN EVERYWHERE, IT'S A STORM!!!1'

*ehm*

And what's this thing about the ending? It was re-arranged just like all the other tracks, and it should be the same arrangement that's on the 1999 / Sound Renewal version of the soundtrack. Changing between that version and the one from 'Inquest' I can't say I really hear much difference in 'seriousness', the old version has just as many cowbells, those 'clack-clack' instruments and weird passages. The new one is mostly just louder and much clearer.

Anyway, if you want to compile a custom version why do you need the Japanese disc, didn't you have the old disc from Manga? You should be able to extract and use the old 2.0 soundtrack from that one.

I've seen several different dates, most of them in the second half of September. On a related note, does anyone know what kind of material these Revoltechs are made of? Is it harder plastic or is it the same, awefully soft and 'rubbery' kind that was used in the earlier Kaiyodo EVAs? (I really hated those. Why is there no Soul of Chogokin Ingram? )

I'd love all the MG ones, but unfortunately I gave up on model kits many years ago because I realised I sucked, so they'd just be a waste of money. More specifically I sucked at painting them, partly I guess because I didn't know the first thing about airbrushes or coats or how to make them look weathered and stuff and never bothered to find out (and of course to paint the body of an entire aircraft by hand = ugly.) I still have a couple of them on my shelf and looking at them almost makes me cry.

Double Post:
Sent in my feedback to that survey, though I'm not eligible for the prizes (not that I wouldn't want a 'Luxurious sparkling poster' but I guess the storyboard books are the real prizes and I of course already have both of the translated ones.)

Q and Spat, if you complete the survey make sure to mention the lack of the original 2.0 tracks in the audio section in order to prevent something similar happening to GunBuster.

Also, I want more money.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
