Do you have seperate logons for each person who uses the PC? If so, were the backups made by someone else done with them signed in? Do these problems occur when someone other than you is signed in?
Also, how's your antivirus definitions? Current? Have you run any antispyware software, such as Spybot Search & Destroy? You're having software issues, not hardware issues, so the amount of time that you've had the computer is very much irrelevant. Jam it back in, in the dark. I didn't say I wouldn't go fishin' with the man.
