Woot. Just bought myself a PSP a couple days ago. Price was reasonable with 1GB memory, MGA2 and Ghosts N Goblins for $420 CND from Microplay. This is unchartered water for me being my first handheld. So far I'm really impressed with it and I'm having a blast with both games.
Out of the box it came with firmware 2.5 which I updated to 2.6 and now I'm running 2.8. I haven't been able to make use of the WLAN feature or use the brower as I don't have a router and there doesn't seem to be any connectivity in my apartment building. I'm a little confused how the PSP downloaded the 2.6 firmware but otherwise I can't get online with it. Incidently I'm not able to enable WMA playback or flash. I read an article that said transfering files to the PSP is "nightmarishly difficult" although I found the whole drag and drop thing pretty easy. I already have some photos, Pink Floyd music and videos neatly filed away. Does running homebrew provide any advantages other than playing PSP backups and emulation? I have the arcade versions of KI and KI2 sitting on my PC which is tempting me to see if they'll work but other than that I'm not interested in playing backups or running much emulation. Although I may use homebrew if there happen to be other neat features it opens up. I saw on QJ.net I believe a program called Helloworld which works with 2.8 firmware. Anyway, thought I'd remind everyone how much the PSP owns incase you had forgotten. It's fun having a new toy after so long. ![]() Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() You're staring at me like I just asked you what the fucking square root of something. |
Okay holy crap MGS Digital Graphic Novel oozes style. I was hoping the voice overs would be included but the sound and music that are present are outta this world. All the KA-BOOMS and BUDDAH BUDDAHs just rock. I can't believe how entertaining this was to watch. I demand Snake Eater DGN. NOW.
Has anyone played Ghost in the Shell that would recommend it? I know it didn't get the hottest reviews but I am interested in trying it out. The only place that seems to have it at the moment is The Sony Store for $49. I know if Microplay had it, it would likely sell for $39. Still a little pricey considering I don't know what to expect really. I haven't seen a used copy anywhere. How ya doing, buddy? ![]() You're staring at me like I just asked you what the fucking square root of something. |
Thanks SouthJag, I haven't played Coded Arms but I'll keep my interest in GITS. Hopefully EB or Microplay will get a copy in the future. Incidentally, I've been meaning to buy Stand Alone Complex for PS2. I think I saw it at EB for 20-25 bucks.
In other unrelated news I saw a gamecube Sonic compilation that actually included Sonic CD at EB the other night. I was nearly floored when I saw this. I had no idea this had been released. Shockingly I didn't buy it, I picked up MGS DGN instead. But I will buy it. Oh, I will. Yes indeed, Portable Ops sounds like it's turning out to be a damn fine game. I think I remember seeing a November launch but I don't recall.
Also, I'm not sure if I should be ashamed or not to admit this, but Crisis Core has me intrigued. From the few details of the game so far it sounds actually very promising. I know I'll be keeping my eye on future details that emerge. Game is due out sometime in spring 2007 and later in the year for a North American release. After browsing IGN and such about TGS coverage it seems there are a few interesting projects in the works for PSP and some more RPGs announced. Remember not too long ago when Valve were all like ZOMG HDR lighting? Yeah, PSP does that. The fellas responsible for Dr. Death are hoping to make some vast improvements with the upcoming sequel including adding that spiffy HL2 technology. The article has the lead designer guy talking about the development process and how they achieved HDR on the PSP. It's an interesting read.
clickage What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() You're staring at me like I just asked you what the fucking square root of something. |
It's pretty much guaranteed to require 2.80 minimum although I'm guessing it will require 3.xx which is no matter for me regardless seeing as I updated to 3.01 today. The new update adds some pretty cool new options and functionality. It's worth downloading no matter which firmware Portable Ops requires to run.

Is there a catch with using this new custom firmware? I haven't dared to try any homebrewing stuff on my PSP since all I ever see is something about the dreaded TA-82 mainboard and must use 1.50 or happy bricking. Since mine is only a few months old I am assuming it has the TA-82 and I'm also running 3.02 firmware. Is there a readme file for dummies on how to use this new firmware? My English-English translator can't seem to decrypt the articles and "instructions" from pspupdates. Every time I visit that site it talks about dumpers and decrypters and downgraders and I don't know what the fuck.
It would be something sweet to be able to have SOTN and Parasite Eve portable. I'm not in the mood to throw a $1,000 on a PS3 and purchase Playstation games I already bought. ![]() What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() You're staring at me like I just asked you what the fucking square root of something. |
Sigh. I'm guessing I can't go to my local Microplay and ask to rent an unpatched Grand Theft Auto and expect positive results? This close to finally being able to downgrade and I run head first in another wall. I'm still waiting for a downgrader with no but included in the installation process.

Thank you for info Jazz, that was my next question. I'll go with my buddy who is likely friends with the new guys working at Microplay. He wants to get homebrew running on his PSP aswell. We won't even need to rent, they'll just lend us the disc for 5 minutes and we'll update in the store. I was just concerned about bricking from using the wrong version of the game. I'm getting anxious to try all this stuff out, it's driving me nuts heh.
EDIT!:: More questions. I downloaded the three files provided here. Is this the custom OE-C firmware and will I still need to install OE-A and OE-B beforehand? There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() You're staring at me like I just asked you what the fucking square root of something.
