Well, how much of a difference in the gameplay is there really? If Crash 1 was $50 and Crash 2 was about $30, I'd say that's a valid suggestion. You'd be missing the original levels, but if you want it mainly for the gameplay, I think playing the sequel is a good way to get a similar experience, maybe even with some new and improved features (GameRankings says Crash 2 is the better game). And it's not a direct sequel, so you wouldn't be missing out on any backstory either.
If you're a completionist though, or are willing to pay $50 for the extra songs and levels for some other reason, don't let me stop you.
