Cats.
Quiet, will sit in my lap while I read or work on the computer, traditionally small (preferred if they sleep on my bed), easily trained, and oh so cuddly!! no drooling, loud noises, getting into the trash, or fighting me for bed space. Jam it back in, in the dark.
