Wikipedia is not always that reliable. They have a section on "troll metal", for crying out loud... completely ridiculous, that's not a genre.

The section on thrash, IIRC, was pretty good however, but it took mostly writings from a thrash expert, so that's good.

Meh. They're a label-manufactured indie rock hipster group. I was skeptical of those reports myself, as I thought mainstream hype couldn't be enough to justify the accusation, but I've seen enough evidence (such as their refusal to play with actual metal bands on tours - too good for metal, even though you plagiarize Sabbath, huh? wankers) to make me change my mind. Their music isn't half bad, but it's derivative Sabbath/Sleep worship without the passion. Listen to Orodruin, Electric Wizard, Sleep, Witchcraft, Pentagram, Witchfinder General or Trouble instead...

There's nowhere I can't reach.

knkwzrd - I'll admit the concert refusal is hearsay, but it came from a relatively reliable source.

Quote from another board, by a member of Azoth:
Quote:
I'm from Austin, I've seen these guys around town quite a bit (at bars, record stores, etc.), met a few of them (the guy 2nd from left and far right). We've even tried to book a show or two with them because of the large crowds they draw (before I had ever been to one of their shows), but it seems they turn down every metal band in town. After I had been to one of their shows, I thought to myself "This is what the crowd at a Death Cab For Cutie show might look like."
This was confirmed as a very common occurrence amongst new successful hyped bands by Mark Briody of Jag Panzer. Though this doesn't mean the above quote is accurate, but it's more fodder in that direction. I'll try to get more sources if you want. Which reminds me, there was a huge thread about this band on some other board (not the one I quoted from, some place called hellride music or something), they made quite a case about all that stuff...

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I think that's why it's ironic, anyway, but it would take too long to elaborate, and I don't feel like it, so carry on. :P

Recent haul:

Decoryah - Wisdom Floats
Memento Mori - Rhymes of Lunacy
Killers (France) - Habemus Metal
Mercyful Fate - Time
Morbid Angel - Covenant
Moonspell - Memorial
Varathron - Crowsreign
Persuader - When Eden Burns

And I got a few gifts from a generous friend (don't ask...) which include some Therion merchandise - a mug and a girly-t, to be exact and an EP by an obscure Hungarian power metal band called Demonlord, titled "Overture". Good stuff, actually, even though they have one hell of a thick accent.

Heh no, it's just the Therion logo and it says "Mexico" on it (the friend who gave it to me is from there). Feels a bit weird to have "Therion in Mexico" merchandise, but hey, it was free.

*spits on Dragonforce* I really, really hate this band. For content-free mindless headbanging fluff, I'll take the first two Children of Bodom, thank you very much.

Orphaned Land is very boring. I don't mind Mabool when I hear it, but it's very forgettable.

For Gamma Ray fans, other than the obvious Helloween I'd recommend Stormwarrior. The 2002 s/t is very much Kai Hansen worship, in the Walls of Jericho vein. Hell, they even have a cover of Heavy Metal Is The Law that sounds just like the original. But despite being rather unoriginal, they are very, very competent and solid. I enjoy the s/t album very much, at least.

There are plenty of bands for that already, that do it in far less irritating ways than Dragonforce.

Unfortunately no, it seems like they're on hold, possibly disbanded. I haven't had news about them in forever. The website does not respond either. Dammit.

Oh well, at least I have the new Ancient Rites. About time it came out too.

I meant to rent that last week-end, but we ended up renting a bunch of horror flicks instead.

I guess I'll download it, too. Are the extra interviews in this file too? (I doubt it, but just in case.)

Oh yeah, Dalkaen - for Therion, um... I would recommend starting with Theli. Or, if you're into death metal, Of Darkness... or Beyond Sanctorum.

But Theli is my favourite. It's just... mind-blowing, really. Only the second Hollenthon album came close to it in terms of bombastic symphonic metal.

Keep in mind, though, that I am an avowed Therion fangirl. I have all their studio albums, and I even got their new box set (which I got for a decent $60 CAD) even though I don't normally buy DVDs (much less music DVDs). So... yeah. But, my taste is impeccable, therefore, if you don't also like Theli, you suck by default.

Very good, actually. Some of the best old-school occult death metal out there. Then again, as I said, you ARE speaking to the Therion fangirl. But if you don't like The Return, then you probably don't like that kind of death metal.

Strangely, I'm wearing that Therion Mexico tour shirt right now... haha.

Bleh, I really can't stand either of those bands.

I can scarcely wait 'til next fall. There's no good concerts right now, but this autumn, there are tons of bands. It costs me over $100 in tickets, but then again, most of them are overpriced... but, I'll still go. Blind Guardian, Testament, Helloween, Moonspell... oh yeah.
Never saw Testament live either. But I suspect that they slay.

Despite the complete turd they have turned into, the first five Slayer albums are absolutely quintessential thrash. I didn't go see them, though. Too expensive, too many crappy bands, and it was at the Bell Centre which means I have to pay more if I want a good place - too much trouble. They suck now anyway, I didn't want to hear them butcher classics or endure crap from God Hates Us All.

For myself, I prefer clean vocals- I can get into the music much easier and all around I think it sounds better. I do listen to bands with aggressive vocals also, such as In Flames and Soilwork and wow, thats about it. I never find myself in the mood to listen to those bands much though because I am rarely in an aggressive mood.

What do you guys prefer?
What a strange question... Why would you like metal music if you don't like aggressive music? You can't separate the aggression from the metal.

For me, I have no preference. It depends entirely on the band. Most very melodic metal bands should stick to clean vocals, growls don't fit (there are some exceptions where it works, though). But extreme metal works so much more when it's accompanied with kick-ass growls. I can't imagine Morbid Angel without growls, it would sound stupid.

Woohoo, just got my Angel Witch s/t (25th anniversary edition) CD in the mail. Time for some classic NWOBHM.

Speaking of which, any NWOBHM fans here? I'm not a huge connoisseur, but when I'm in the mood I love to play some old Legend, Cloven Hoof, Angel Witch, Witchfinder General or Tokyo Blade... or hell, even the classic Def Leppard debut.

Gigantour sucks more because of Opeth. Its only saving grace is Overkill, and I've already seen them so I really don't care. The rest is complete shit.

Melodic growling? That's silly. Controlled, however, I can understand. Schuldiner, Cavalera, Nick Holmes, Abbath, David Vincent, Wojtek Lisicki, Fernando Ribeiro... now those are awesome, controlled growlers.

Well, earlier Immortal vocals (and earlier Immortal period) was pretty chaotic. But his voice sounds actually clear (by growling standards) and semi-understandable on At the Heart of Winter and later.

I would not call Avenged Sevenfold metal, and it's not because they suck. Plenty of metal bands suck, after all.
These hipster douches just took the worst parts of Gothencore, emo and modern rock, watered it down, and shat out their sonic AIDS. The fact that they look more like faggots than the Poison "guys" ever did doesn't help.

I agree. The black metal nicknames just pursue the Venom tradition. It's often silly, but it can still work. Plenty of times it's tongue-in-cheek as well.
When pseudo-core bands do it, it's more insulting than anything else.

Yes, Amon Amarth's viking influence is purely lyrical. Personally I find them pretty boring.

I buy as much music as I can find. Money is not too much of a problem except for rare OOP shit, availability is usually what slows me down. All the mp3s I share on my FTP are my own album rips, anyway (I used to have a few MP3 albums on there but to make space and sort it out better, I moved them to a different partition).

I would never count having an album as mp3 as an "ownership", unless the album is exceptionally rare and impossible to find in physical format (see: Anacrusis - Suffering Hour, for example. I'd still like the CD, but the band did offer their entire discography on mp3 themselves anyway).

Jam it back in, in the dark.

That's funny. I thought these three songs were boring, forgettable, and pretty much worse than the worst filler tracks of the last two albums.

Unless the rest of the album is totally killer (read: not gonna happen), the album will be a complete turd.

To say that any of these songs is even close to the worst song off Seventh Son is complete blasphemy. Ugh, that's possibly my favourite album, these songs are nowhere close.

There's nowhere I can't reach.
