It makes sense that there's no new downloadable characters. He said it himself, there is no hard drive on the Wii, which makes it tricky to store any playable characters since it'd take quite a bit of memory to do so. Something the Wii's internal memory cannot handle, not to mention if they did it, EVERYBODY would need to get new characters for online play. Just seems like a pain to me. I'm happy with what they have now.

Damn.
Marth isn't on the opening lineup. Guess I know what I'm going to be doing first. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Hmm....I'm not sure why they bothered to change Ike's voice from the Path of Radiance release...I thought he sounded fine then. I still wish they had the original Japanese voices, much like they did in melee. I just don't see why they went through the trouble to hire more voice actors for no real reason.

So is there really supposed to be a shortage of this game? I didn't think it was possible, but the closer we get to release date, the more I regret not pre-ordering this game. I really didn't expect there to be a shortage of any type. They've had an entire month to roll out with more copies of this game, shouldn't there be a fair amount of copies. Especially with stores still offering pre-orders.

So I just got this game yesterday, and played through a bit of SSE, and, I'd have to say, for the first time, I found the story to actually lead somewhere. It's by no means perfect, but it's definitely good that the game has a real story now.
I got to using Marth, Ike, Metaknight (I forget what the scenario was called) since it was already around 12am yesterday and I had class 8am this morning. I noticed something playing with friends though. I found two notable "nerfs" with two characters. Link's clear out move (up+B) has seriously shortened range, as with Marth's sword. I didn't think it was that bad when I saw the video posted earlier, but now that I played it, it's REALLY nerfed in practice. I also found final smashes to be a bit too abundant in that you could just run around doging everybody and then grab the smash ball whenever it came out and you could probably win a match just by doing that. I usually run away on large stages in melee, picking off weaker people, but even I think this is ridiculous. FELIPE NO |
I'm somewhere between 40% and 50% through SSE and I've unlocked (from SSE) Marth, Captain Falcon, Snake, Falco, Lucario, and Game & Watch (I think that's it). I got Luigi and Ness from Brawls. There might be some that I'm forgetting, but from what I remember, I have these characters. I don't find SSE to be that hard, but then again, I'm playing on Normal. I still need a continue on a few sections (like the maze in the research facility) but it wasn't terribly difficult.
I remember one evil trick they did, where they started you off in the air with a trophy falling beside you, and made you think you could just get to the ground to get it, only to find it dropping into a pit. Maybe I was the only one who fell for that, but it pissed me off. I've only completed (got 100%) a few places on the SSE map so far. Some I know I missed (like I flew over them or something), some others, I had no idea what I missed. Maybe if I got a buddy to co-op with me, it'd be easier spotting stuff. I'd have to wonder how the rocket barrels work for co-op though.

So I just tried some online Smash yesterday. First things first, is the service somewhat slow at times? At best, all of my inputs happen a half second later. At worst, the game literally slows down (to like 20 frames per second). I also found it taking a while to actually get a game going, as far as finding people to play against.
I'll put my friend code up when I get back. I wrote it down earlier. I also can't seem to sign up for the Wiki, so if somebody could add mine there for me, that'd be great. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Time to put in a BUNCH of friend codes.... This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Contrary to most others, I found Toon Link surprisingly easy, Maybe I just got lucky. I was using Marth at the time, and it seems that his dancing blade was quite effective at dealing damage, and aerial attacks were surprisingly effective at launching him. You really just can't give him a chance to attack.
Well, I played on normal too, maybe you guys were playing it on hard? I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I've used all the control schemes at least a few rounds and here are my opinions on it.
Wiimote on its side: It's rather simple for first time players, but it's really awkward for seasoned players. Grab/Throw is REALLY out of the way (mapped to the + or - button, I forget which), and shielding is also rather awkward to press (it's the trigger on the remote, which, if you hold it on its side, the side of your index finger will be pressing it. It's simple because both A and B are easily accessible as is the d-pad, making move execution easy as long as you're not grabbing/throwing or rolling/dodging/shielding. Wii Remote + Nunchuck: Surprisingly good actually. I'd recommend this one if you absolutely cannot get a Gamecube controller. The analog stick is precise and both A and B are easily reachable. Again you'll have to get used to grab/throw (which is A + B, not too hard) and shield/roll/dodge (which is mapped to Z, or the Left Trigger. I think Left trigger was dodge on the gamecube controller too, but I always used the right trigger, so it's unnatural to me.) Otherwise, a solid choice. Wii Remote + Classic Controller: This one is also pretty good, but I found this to be somewhat more imprecise, and the analog stick is further away (yes, you use the analog stick to move, not the d-pad) so if you have small hands, this is a no go. The button layout is pretty much unchanged, but since the analog stick is further away, again, small hands won't like this. Probably doesn't affect larger hands. Gamecube Controller: To almost all seasoned players, this is the most natural feel for obvious reasons. Gamecube controllers shouldn't be too hard to find unless your looking wireless Wavebird controllers, in which case, since they're not in production anymore, your best bet is eBay. I was speaking idiomatically. |

Yeah, but "Chao" looks like "Chato" missing the 'T'. >_<
I'll probably change my name to my GFF username (probably just Omni) since it'll be easier for people to tell who I am here. Hopefully, I can change it. I still need to add a bunch of friend codes from the list. This is really annoying. Also, exactly where is Jigglypuff and Wolf in SSE? So many places to 100% left, and I can't find the last thing I'm missing in The Halberd Exterior. Gamefaqs is no help at this point either. -_- As for my top 4 characters. Obviously Marth is my primary (even if he is nerfed). Ike makes a good secondary since he has raw power and a slew of cheap moves he can pull. After that it gets hazy. I want to say Snake because of his arsenal of explosive moves and laying mines everywhere to piss people off, not to mention he's REALLY strong. But he's in competition with Olimar (surprisingly fun to use), Sonic (it's fun running circles around people), Pikachu (my old primary), or Link (I like swords.) FELIPE NO

If somebody with a GFWiki account could help me, change my nick to "Omni"
Also, I'm not quite sure how this registration works. I added a bunch of people, but they all say "Awaiting Registration" except for Chaotic, who has a green circle on the right side of the box. What does that mean? What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Hmm....so he has a good connection, but still awaiting registration....
I just finished adding everybody on the Wiki list. The other oddball entry is Identity Crisis's, which instead of saying "Awaiting Registration" says "Offline." I assume this means he's already confirmed it. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Yeah, I'm just going to leave mine on for a day or two for registration. I did just confirm Wolf (or at least Wolf was looking for a game last I checked my roster), so all is good.

I'd be somewhat interested, but I'm almost certain I'd get my ass handed to me, but whatever. My schedule's also rather tight because of school. I only have, possibly Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to do this.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
I suppose I'm part of the minority that loves large stages over small ones. Temple was my favorite stage in Melee. I like New Pork City too, but whatever.
I'd be interested in joining, but I'm going to say it now that it sucks for whichever clan ends up with me, because I'm not very good against human players. (I like exploiting AI, though. ^_^) I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I'm curious, am I the only one who finds the online play to be rather superficial? I personally find Online play not nearly as fun as playing with buddies next to you. Something about not being able to scream at the guy next to you or smack them in the back of the head for a cheap kill suddenly takes a lot of the fun and appeal I found in Smash Bros. to begin with.
Just curious with this too, would anybody be interested in a long-term, anything goes, free-for-all "tournament/league"? I put that last part in quotes because I realize much of the purpose of tournaments and leagues is to be competitive. The one I have in mind serves a different purpose, and rather than emphasizing on rules in the form of banning things to be fair, just don't ban anything and let lady luck roam free. We could just set up scheduled games where 4 people go at it every weekend or something and post a saved replay of it here (or if you had time, you could spectate/bet on the match). We could keep records of wins and losses here. It would be a very loose event and it wouldn't necessarily have an end but it's just something for fun. I don't know, thoughts or opinions? I was speaking idiomatically. |

I really just have to ask, even if there were no lag issues, does anybody find playing online to be actually "fun?"
I've tried online before, and it runs decently at best, and horribly at worst. Even running decently, I didn't find it to be much fun. I prefer playing against local people (on the same Wii, on the same television, in the same room) because most of the fun I find with Smash Bros. is slapping the guy next to you because of something stupid. Playing with completely random people takes a lot of the fun out of the game (for me anyway). Playing with friends or at least people you know is probably better (though admittedly, I've never had the chance to play with people I know, I've added everybody on the Wiki, but I've never actually played with anybody.) but I'm still pessimistic about online play. I don't mind getting my ass handed to me by people I know, but getting my ass handed to me by an anonymous person is somewhat annoying, to say the least. So, for me, it's hard to justify it as being "fun" and having shitty speeds just adds insult to injury. I'll probably be staying off online play indefinitely (unless I know EXACTLY and preferably in-person who people on the other end are). Having voice chat doesn't help because I'll inevitably be spammed with either annoying 12 year olds or tourneyfags about how much I suck, and I'd rather not provide an answer to those for the good of all that is holy. FELIPE NO |
You know a story isn't very good if you need somebody next to you explaining it. :/
I found the SSE story to be shallow at best. That being said, I still found it to be a lot of fun, but I'm quite sure the story contributed very little. They explain nothing, and there are no voices or subtitles to suggest otherwise. On a random note, I find myself trying to use different control schemes often. More specifically, I'm attempting to master to a competent degree, the Wiimote+Nunchuck layout. It's actually quite effective, IMO. I don't grab/throw often, so that doesn't pose much of a problem for me. The only thing that poses a problem is me unleashing a special move when I really meant to shield/roll/dodge. Does anybody else use/like to use any other combination outside of the GCN controller? Just curious. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Seriously though, I do it just because it feels so natural to me to use up to jump. Most amazing jew boots |
