Depends on what you want.

First of all, AGP or PCI-Express?

Second, Short Term Solution, or Lasting Solution?

Third, What is your Budget?

If you have AGP, XFX PVT73KUAL3 Geforce 7600GS 256MB GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail - $124.99 from newegg.com

If you have PCI-Express, eVGA 256-P2-N615-TX Geforce 7600GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail - $129.99 from newegg.com

Both are Capable of Running Half Life 2 Very Well. I'm assuming you want to keep it relatively cheap, so these are more or less short-term solutions (1 to 2 years tops)

Jam it back in, in the dark.

It would also depend on the remainder of your PC specs.

Namely CPU speed and Memory.

There's nowhere I can't reach.
