On the other-hand, it does support loading stuff onto a USB flash drive to transfer data over

Yeah, that's what I did. Since the slim doesn't take Memory cards and I don't actually own a USB flash drive, what I did was move everything on to Philia's system (which is now sporting my old FFXIII-branded 250 gig HDD ;_

so I could dump the memory card for the trade-in (and I wouldn't need it anyway since we'd only have one system). Then I bummed a USB flash drive for a few minutes off of Kyndig to move my stuff off her system onto the new one and done.

I've never even heard of those before. A friend of mine's XBox Arcade took a shit on him (big surprise): Will this cable allow him to transfer data from one hard drive to another, directly? Or will he have to go from HDD->Mem Card->HDD?

You can transfer directly; you plug the old HDD into this cable thing, then that goes into the new system via USB. You then run a program off a disc and it basically wipes anything on the destination HDD, and completely transfers everything off your old HDD as well as wiping it at the same time (to avoid copying data I guess). Keep in mind there are a few game saves that cannot be transferred, I think the big one is the first Viva Pinata and there's one other game.
I don't really have any way of confirming it, but supposedly these new systems have the software built in, but you still need the cable. Wouldn't help me in this case though because you have to trade in the HDD to get the new system

I really want to know how quiet they are compare to the last model.

I'll check it out in a minute, but first reports I'm seeing from people is that it runs way way quieter.
Additional Spam:
Edit: At first impression it's waaaaaaaaay quieter. It wasn't as much of an issue for me since I was installing game for the most part, but I was just running ODST non-installed and it was almost completely quiet. I could still hear the fan if I was right up on the system but it wasn't even terrible then. On a couch a few feet away I doubt you'd hear anything even if you tried.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
