As sort of a very general answer:
-Halo is generally pretty to look at; a lot of it is the art style and color choices they've gone with. -Halo is very accessible from a game design and control standpoint, as well as accommodating a wide range of player skill levels. -Halo: CE revolutionized console FPS games. Regardless of what you think of Halo itself, there is no arguing that modern console FPS games all owe a huge amount to Halo. This is more relevant now simply because when it came out it was so amazing and accrued such a fanbase, that they've carried that fanbase and momentum from game to game. -Also say what you will about Halo's story, but they've established a good back-story for the universe that works, and have a super recognizable and "badass" main character that people love. -Ultimately, the games are generally just balanced very well; they polish and polish. With a lot of online multiplayer games (again talking specifically console games here) they either have balance issues, or are broken and/or exploited (see: GoW 1/2, MW 1/2, etc). Aside from the BXR thing in Halo 2 and a very small vocal minority bitching about very specific things, Halo generally just doesn't have these gamebreaking issues like other games often do. They usually have a pretty good sandbox in terms of map design, and weapon and vehicle balance. There's also a certain "feel" to Halo that other console FPS games don't have; the color palette, the certain "floatiness" to your jumps and movements, and other things that just seem to click very well. It's a very "bro" game; a lot of people have just played casually on weekends for years since it's so easy to get in and out of. I haven't played MW2 in about 4 months now; if I went back now I would get destroyed. With Halo, usually after a match or two tops you're back in the saddle. RR, if nothing else you should check out some of the Reach Firefight videos; even if multiplayer turns out to not be your thing for whatever reason, Firefight/horde mode is always a good time with friends. Goodies from the BWU and other places.
-Quick Look of Boardwalk. This video in particular has caught a lot of attention since it shows how drastically the recoil on the pistol has been reduced from the Beta (the reticule bloom is still there).
-Quick Look of Countdown
-The Legendary Edition download behind the scenes content has been detailed; sounds exactly like the Halo 1/2 commentary provided in the Halo 3 Legendary Edition (which for those that have never seen it, is AWESOME). Still super bummed it's a digital download, but whatcha gonna do?
-Per urk in the BWU, it's not possible to set up credit-farming specific games. Apparently there has been some discussion on this since some people who got retail copies early are playing offline and setting up "ideal" gametypes to earn tons cR. However when you connect to Xbox Live, the game will notify you that the online credit scale works differently, and will automatically scale your offline earned cR to a lower online-scaled amount. This was done intentionally so people who somehow still aren't on Xbox Live can earn their way to the crazier stuff faster then since they're not able to play online and do the challenges, etc. But this system is in place to avoid people abusing that, which is neat that they thought of. You will lose any Armory pieces that you no longer meet the cR or Rank requirements to have once you connect online. -Bungie had a panel at PAX this weekend, and video is up of it. I'm watching it right now, apparently they go into a lot of detail regarding the very early development, stuff that was cut from the game (was originally going to be Noble Seven, more space battle stuff and boarding) and other cool stuff from what I'm told. 4 parts of the video here:
-No one knows if it's accurate or not, but supposed names of the first Reach Map Pack DLCs got leaked out via some sort of completely unconfirmed blog that was then pulled. Was 3 MP maps and 3 Firefight maps. Bungie has confirmed that they are working on at least one map pack. -Skulls will be available from the start of Campaign, however there will be "other" collectibles to find, which has already been confirmed by leaked copies that there is apparently a "datapad" in each level. -Interesting tidbit I haven't seen; they've also confirmed that Campaign and Firefight both have Jump OUT capability, but not Jump IN. So this means no more getting screwed by someone leaving the Firefight match which would cause it to end for everyone. Alternatively though this means people cannot join a session already in progress, but it's better than before at least. -Halo-branded Doritos and Mtn Dew are out in the wild now (although I haven't seen them yet). No Game Fuel is disappointing still though ![]() ![]() With the PAX panel over with, there's only one more BWU before Reach releases, and that should be the last of any type of information released (we should be getting launch Playlist details). I'll be working on getting the OP finalized by the end of today (mainly just need to do the image headers) and then that should be about that. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |

Fuck, I wish.
Thanks for the correction Shake, I'll fix that shortly. Also I've been replaying Halo CE, and while I still stand by my easy to get back in the saddle statement for multiplayer (as I've done so a few times this year), maybe not so much for Campaign as I am sucking ass right now in CE. Jam it back in, in the dark. |

Yeah, GAF already got all creepy about her with her profile and pics.
Anyway, the new bungie.net is up (I think this may be a couple days old actually), the top navigation bars and how they break down is much more user friendly now. Nothing happens if you go to Reach stats though, it gives you a message saying it's not 9/14 yet :P ![]() How ya doing, buddy? |
HEY SKILLS: Video: Halo: Reach Achievements made easy (and cheat-y) | Joystiq
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Also u mad that I've got all achievements in Crackdown 2 now. Also apparently Moo has this now? I hadn't bothered even trying to get it early because they already said that they were doing a cR reset when the game launched; given as how you get cR boosts for getting achievements, I figured I'd be better off waiting since those cR would get wiped, but apparently I'm seeing that the wipe happened earlier today. So if you see this Moo you should be good to go. I miiiight try to see if I can snag a copy a 7-11 or something tomorrow, but I've still got the last Halo book, the graphic novels, and the encyclopedia to get through over the weekend along with some other stuff so I'm not too hung up about it, especially since there's no way I can get out of work on Monday. I was speaking idiomatically. |
Hmm, I don't know then, couldn't find anything concrete. Anyway, a fair amount of people have gotten the game now, and this week's update is up, Reach stats and profiles are up on Bungie.net, and all kinds of stuff, let's get started with one of many already awesome/hilarious screenshots coming in:
![]() -Final Launch Playlists are live and running. Every gametype and map for each playlist can be found here. If you're just interested in the hoppers and not the specifics, come Tuesday you will have: Rumble Pit - 8 players / up to 4 local / Max Party size = 8 Team Slayer - 8 players / up to 4 local / Max Party size = 8 Team Objective - 8 players / up to 4 local / Max Party size = 8 Multi-Team - 12 Players (6 teams of 2) / up to 4 local / Max Party size = 12 Big Team Battle - 16 players / up to 2 local / Max Party size = 16 Invasion - 12 players / up to 4 local / Max Party size = 12 Firefight - 4 players / up to 2 local / Max Party size = 4 *This standard Firefight hopper contains standard Firefight, Rocketfight, Sniperfight, and Generator Defense.Score Attack - 1 player / up to 1 local / Max Party size = 1 *This Firefight hopper contains Score Attack, Sniper Attack, Crashsite, and Gruntpocalypse (AWWWWW SHIIIIIIIT).Team Arena - 8 players / up to 2 local / Max Party size = 4 Doubles Arena - 4 players / up to 2 local / Max Party size = 2 Some notes on the above: -Yes, Invasion is only 6v6, despite them saying it would be 8v8 in the final game, super disappointing. -I did not realize that the Score Attack modes in Firefight are apparently solo affairs, which is kind of weird. I also have no clue what "Crashsite" gametype is in that hopper. -Arena is intentionally being held back until launch day (to avoid giving people who got it early a head start). Also FYI both Arena hoppers are only Slayer Pro and Slayer DMR. -Campaign Co-op Matchmaking and Versus Firefight are both intentionally delayed until after launch; Campaign to avoid getting put into games that are further along in the story than most people might be early on. -The only 2 local players being allowed in BTB is causing some people to flip out. I don't think anyone here ever really has guests, but I could see why some people would be upset. Alternatively though, that potentially means no more getting fucked by large groups of guests in BTB. -Matchmaking Bans for quitting are IN FULL EFFECT. Someone on GAF quit out of 3 or 4 games (with the last one being a boot from an accidental betrayal) and straight up got the temporary matchmaking ban (IIRC it's like 30 minutes). Good to see that that's definitely in place, and they've said that it's only for habitual quitters are are doing it a lot in fairly short periods of time, so everyone should be fine with the occasional quit or whatever. Along the same lines there was a big chunk of today's BWU devoted to them talking about how committed they are to swing the Banhammer hard on people, and have already done so and will continue to do so. -All player stuff for Reach is up on bungie.net, which means we can now see all the medal names and descriptions on anyone's account (for example here. There's a billion of them and I don't have it in me to type it up at the moment, but there's some really, really good ones now: Broseidon: Spawn on a teammate 15 times in one game without dying (?) -The review embargoes lift either tomorrow or Sunday morning, but Metacritic inadvertently posted Gameinformer's review tagline: "9.5 - Any disappointment series fans felt after ODST should be completely washed away." What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Yeah, Wedge just called me out on that on the SC. Absolutely swear to God when I looked earlier the description was just as I posted it, but now it's not, weird.

Neat, you can board enemy mongooses now: Bungie.net : Halo Reach : File Details
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
My Gamestop isn't doing a midnight launch (which I probably wouldn't have gone to anyway), but what sucks is that I assumed they would open at 8am tomorrow like they did for ODST, but nope they open at 10. Further complicated by me having a filling done tomorrow at 11:30. Hmm.
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Will do, wouldn't expect that to be until probably 1 or 2 though. I need to run some errands this morning, still not sure if I'm going to try to snag my copy before or after I go to the dentist yet. If I do go before, I'll only be on for a few minutes, probably will just install the game and play a game of Gruntopacalypse or something.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
What the fuck? lololol
Bungie.net : Halo Reach : File Details This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
That'll probably be easier to get going in a week or two; right now I always have a billion people on, but they're already in huge groups, or more often then not people are still doing Campaign stuff. Once people knock out the majority of the Campaign stuff (aka Achievements) it'll probably be easier to get groups together.
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Apparently the invite system in Reach is weird. The reason that I bailed after that game was because during the game Goodhand had sent me an invite, and after you booted me it put me directly into their lobby (??). DN, the armor stuff is purely for looks; it doesn't affect abilities or your hitbox. It does carry over into all modes though. I was speaking idiomatically. |
The servers just still seem to be wonky off and on.
And yes, SWAT and Snipers need to either not be in BTB, or much less frequent. Double as much for Team Slayer, Team Swat on Paradiso is what we wind up with half the time on that. I know they're trying to keep as few playlists as possible for population purposes, but no one on either side is happy about SWAT/Snipers not having a dedicated playlist and being put heavily into others. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Haven't really weighed in at all since the game came out, will get this out and be done with it :lol
Campaign: Overall pretty good; somewhat disappointed that there wasn't any super huge standout moments like Halo 3 had, but the game consistently is dropping you into great situations, but just none really stand out to me over the rest after going through it twice. The framerate and motion blur stuff is definitely an issue, and is largely inexcusable. I'm sure there's tech reasons (at least for the framerate), but it's really noticeable at parts, especially since I don't recall that ever being a problem in previous games. Game is gorgeous graphically though. Going through it twice now I don't understand why some weapons are even in the game (ex. Spiker, Plasma Rifle, etc). Also the pro pipe is nowhere near as useful in either Campaign or Multiplayer as it was in the Beta, seems almost useless now. The only particularly weak portion of the Campaign is that I don't feel that Bungie still gets how to do characterization in their games. They've built an amazing universe and back fiction, but most times when I'm watching in a cutscene in any Halo game I'm groaning (to war, monument to all your sins, etc). Reach is much better than Halo 3 in that regard, but I still feel that they didn't do a particularly great job of building up these characters or conveying what was going on. Maybe I had misconceptions here, but pre-release they seemed to be putting a lot of emphasis into being a part of this team and whatnot, but for the most part they didn't seem to build any of them up very well. Except for maybe 1 or 2 of them I wound up completely not caring about them, they were just NPCs I was rolling with on occasion. I also touch on this a bit in the spoilery section below. Music is excellent (as always). Plot stuff (end game spoilers): Spoiler:
Firefight: Awesome, and the number of options are great. I am proud to say post-release I stand by Gruntocalypse being the greatest thing ever. I do wish that you could do it with 4 people in Matchmaking though. Multi: Getting increasingly sick of Matchmaking; people I play with keep getting completely lagged/dropped out of games where they've never had any problems with any other games (including Halo 3). Aside from that though, really sick of the current playlist setup, at least for BTB and Invasion. Incredibly disappointed to learn that there apparently won't be any updates for at least 2 weeks, I honestly don't think I have it in me to continue playing it like I am now until they make some fixes. I don't like Snipers, and when I'm playing BTB/Invasion the group is large enough where there's usually several people who are only casual Halo players, and they never like and/or get dominated on these gametypes. Because of there not currently being any split, almost every lobby turns into a For/Against for the Sniper/SWAT gametype so usually half of the lobby is not happy, and honestly I have no idea why either of these would really be in BTB to begin with. Also I wish Rally showed up in any other playlist but FFA as I haven't had the chance to play it yet; even if it was just in multi-team that'd be great. Also I thought Invasion was going to be in as a regular gametype but it's not on any of the current matchmaking lists; is that just going to be a weekend-type thing like it was in Halo 3? I remember some talk about Save Haven mode and all that and wanted to check it out ![]() Also starting to realize that it doesn't seem like there's enough big maps in the game for BTB; Countdown for example comes up frequently and is a complete clusterfuck. If they're going to toss a map of that size in there, they could at least throw in some others of similar size to at least get some variety going if nothing else (like Pinnacle or Asylum). Also I agree with the sentiment that while the official Forge World maps are good (or at least interesting) to play, visually they're very very boring. Hopefully DLC maps come sooner rather than later. Boneyard has spawns that are hilariously broken in any sort of Slayer gametype; for whatever reason they apparently decided to not use half of the map (where the Elites start in normal Invasion) at all. It will always spawn one side by where you take the core to on the cliff edge, and that team always gets completely clown shoe'd by spawn killing. I honestly don't think I've played a Slayer match on that map that has not been a complete domination by the team who doesn't spawn there. Generally speaking that entire Elite starting side of the map seems completely unused. Hemorrhage is fine, but the gametypes that frequently come up on it are ridiculous (4v4 SWAT, really?), and in "standard" BTB matches on it it seems like it needs another power weapon. More often than not it seems like one team will get the upper hand with vehicles, then completely dominate the rest of the match. Unless I'm retarded the only anti-vehicle weapon on the map (aside other vehicles) is the Plasma Launcher in the middle; which seems a bit nerfed, and is basically impossible to get to if your team is getting dominated. Maybe either tweaking vehicle placements/respawns or getting rid of the Scorpions would also resolve it. I like Asylum, Reflection, Boardwalk and Countdown, although Countdown is a completely clusterfuck in any type of BTB game. I've only played Swordbase once or twice in the retail release, also like it and the little graphical touches they've made are good. Haven't played any objective games on it though, can't recall if they said they were changing the flag issues people had in the Beta or not. Zealot is fine, but the top portion is completely broken as has been already mentioned; a team will take the lead, go up top, and camp the lifts. I haven't seen Pinnacle yet (have been doing mostly BTB/Invasion, only done 5-8 TS matches and it hasn't come up).I'm actually not a huge fan of Spire; it seems to suffer from the same problem as Boneyard in that it seems to have good chunks of the map that are not used at all, and the map just doesn't seem to flow very well at all. It's interesting though. On the other hand any gametype on it where Falcons get going seems to be completely jacked, as if the Falcon pilot is at all decent is becomes extraordinarily difficult to take it out with the weapons on the map; definitely wish there was a laser on there. Misc: I really love the Armory, as well as the Challenges. I like waking up in the mornings and seeing on bnet what the Challenges are for that day. As soon as I hit a day where I don't get all the challenges I'll probably stop being quite so OCD about it, but it is a good initiative to get people on and playing, and it seems to be working to that end with casual players I play with talking about doing some modes to get Challenges done. I also really like how you just have the universal rank across everything; you always feel like you're building towards something (like in say, CoD). I still think that the upgrades being visual only is a bit disappointing though; I don't know that I would want them to be tied to anything relevant in-game (like weapons), but I also don't find much point in pimping out your Spartan as far as multiplayer/Firefight goes since the only time you see yourself is when you're dead, and in combat no one's armor looks so dramatically different that it's really noteworthy, or even noticing at all. I'm still glad it's there, but it feels like they should have gone more in one direction or the other. Overall I really love the game, and it has a huge amount of options and playstyles that you could play it forever. I do have some issues with the Campaign (framerate and characters/plot) but is overall put together very well. Multiplayer is great, but they really need to address some current issues ASAP, as well as get some more visually distinctive maps out ASAP (the Forge World maps are good, but visually very bland). FELIPE NO |
Cleaned up the OP some, added how to get the Halo Waypoint-required Armors, and added links to the very top of the OP that take you to the current Daily/Weekly Challenges and Playlists.
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Nah, we continue to have major matchmaking issues with people. Omangus gets dropped frequently, as does Roflfox, Goodhand, and two of my other friends. Last night I think we spent over 10 minutes actually trying to get everyone into a lobby then a game without dropping.
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
No idea either. It happens with my friends in multiple groups across different area/continents, and everyone is always green across the board on the Network Status screen. Looking online there's a TON of people bitching about this, so it doesn't seem to be just us or anything. Sometimes we can have a group of 8 players fine no problem, but other times it's a nightmare.
Most amazing jew boots |
Also they still get all the credits they've earned except for the Game Complete bonus, and maybe the performance bonus (not sure on that one).
Aside from Shin's douchery, there is supposedly some sort of Matchmaking update coming on Friday. Thank fucking God. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
YOU HAVE STARTED DOWN A DARK BUT GLORIOUS PATH RR
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I like SWAT fine, but both that and Snipers are weighed WAY too heavily in Team Slayer right now, and neither one should exist in BTB period.
How ya doing, buddy? |
The % of people who will hit the daily cap with any sort of regularity is miniscule, and if it wasn't in place people would have already cheated their way to the highest rank which Bungie hasn't even revealed what it is or what you get. They also said more than 6 months before launch that community milestones would have to be met to for some unlocks, etc. The amount on the cap is so high doesn't seem to suggest that they're trying to force people's ranks to be similar as there are already huge disparities, so I don't think that's why they did it either.
It's sort of bullshit yes, but if you're accumulating ~60,000 credits in a 24 hours often enough where this is actually a problem I think you should probably re-evaluate some things. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
This week's BWU is up, talk of playlist changes, cR AND current Max rank caps.
First off, playlist changes for the first playlist update; word on the street the date is October 7th, and the Update itself mentions they are already working on other stuff for another update later in October. For the first update:
Regarding the Daily cR cap, they don't release the exact number (again it's supposedly about 60k) and re-confirm that you will not be banned for playing a lot so long as it's legitimate playing; some people were finding ways to exploit by somehow resetting their ranks and commendations so they were re-earning all those cR which is where that confusion came from. Basically very few people are legitimately hitting the daily cap, and mostly as a result of Campaign and Firefight play, but there doesn't appear to be any indication that this will be going away. Also worth noting that they've already said before that Firefight (specifically Score Attack/Grunt Party) is already probably too heavy on providing cR and Commendations and that they are "looking at it." So it's likely that will get toned down at some point anyway, which would probably prevent 90% of the people currently hitting the cap from hitting it anyway. Now what I hadn't heard is that there is actually a max rank currently in Reach. From the BWU:
Also in typing that out I just realized that if we ARE going to be sitting on this current max rank for a bit, I'm almost not sure why they would bother with the daily cap. Hmmmm. It will be interesting to see how they manage this; Luke Smith (as far as I know) is more or less in charge of this stuff, and I've got faith in the guy but this could wind up burning people as well. Guess we'll see. FELIPE NO |
