I'm not a big fan of the Guardian, and this shows why. There was a far better analysis in The Economist's previous issue.
Anyway, I think this is a phenomenally vexing situation. Both sides are completely justified in their opinions, and either side, ultimately, could accept the other's preference as a reality.
I don't support their union, despite absolutely adoring the country. Any nation can form free trade treaties with any other state. What defines the European Union, ultimately, is culture (and the constant pressing for a constitutional treaty validates this). Unfortunately, Byzantine culture has been displaced by Ottoman and ultra-modernist ones. Turkey just does not belong. Like I said, though, either choice is acceptable.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
