You know what? If one episode a week is what it takes to avoid filler (again) for good, then I'm all for it. Manga based anime really needs to learn how to pace itself.
I'm of the opinion that monthly manga's are usually better paced when transcribed on-screen to anime, rather than their weekly counterparts. Monthly manga's transcribed to anime seems to have more happening per episode of anime as well... (again, my opinion).

my boring explanation as to why.:
Current monthly manga's released in anime: Nodame Cantabile, NANA, Claymore, Lovely Complex to name a few (usually shojo-type mangas will more likely be released monthly than anything.

Current weekly manga's released in anime: Bleach, ONEPIECE, Naruto Shippuden, etc. You get the idea. These guys follow the sad, sad template of the Dragonball syndrome where it's usually 5-10 minutes of re-cap, 5-10 minutes of something happening, then 5-10 minutes of filler.

REASON BEING: Weekly manga's (typically the action-packed ones) are released every week in 15-16 pages each. A page can be easily covered within anywhere from a split 1/2 second to 4 seconds in anime. Now with that, the typical amount of manga episodes included per anime episode is like 2 or 3 to 1. And if you haven't noticed, such anime like Naruto Shippuden and Bleach almost quite literally follow the manga frame per frame. With the pace of what anime can cover in terms of time where manga can't, it's not hard to see why it takes the anime only a little bit to catch up really quickly. Which is why probably the current animes that have caught up to its manga are starting to get released every other week or just fillers for a while.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
