Hard Drive backup (Mac OS X)

My friend needs to backup her hard drive (iBook, running OS X Panther) before she can get her optical drive fixed -- she wants a carbon copy/clone/mirror, but the problem is, the external hard drive she wants to use doesn't support filenames over 21 characters, etc. Essentially, the external is built for Windows even if it's compatible with Macs. Does anyone know what to do in this situation? Find some magical batch file renamer? Some backup program that overrides this character limit? :/ Since her optical drive's broken, no DVDs can be burned, either. Aghh.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Jam it back in, in the dark.
