The hardest level is Catcher Chocobo in FFX. Never mind the fact it's not actually a level, but that damn game made me want to throw my PS2 out the window...twice.
Pretty much lots of the NES games had hard levels...and they've all been mentioned in this thread already. I'm glad the later games aren't so difficult anymore. Jam it back in, in the dark.
